How Rocket Learned to Read

  1. Why did you choose this book, why do you consider it of high quality? 4 points

It shows children that words are made up “one letter at a time” and that learning to read is a process that takes time and practice. It gives written examples of developmentally appropriate vocabulary words that would be relatable to their lives, for example C-O-L-D and S-U-N. It uses sounds like G-R-R-R and visuals like W-H-O-O-S-H to relate spelling to their senses. The graphics are appealing to this age group, with a positive, warm and friendly outlook on reading.

Families will be encouraged to help find and make words by reading different stories together and making a list of stories of stories read. From the books read words can be found.

The Alphabet Banner

After reading the story How Rocket Learned to Read, inside the bag will be each letter of the alphabet upper case and lower case with blank sheets of white paper. With the white paper there will be tape to tape the paper together to make a banner. The sheets will be taped horizontally, edge to edge so that they fold together on the dotted line like the example below shows.

Once you have the banner taped together, use the letters and glue stick provided to glue the letters A-Z on the banner (white paper) as you and your child see fit. Once the letters are glued on you and your child can find a place around your home to hang the banner or set somewhere carefully that you can see it.You can use the banner to recite the alphabet together, and decorate the top with colors or drawings of objects, foods, and animals etc. that start with each letter.

Note to Parents:Instilling a love of reading at an early age will benefit cognitive and literacy development as they grow. Reading together at home can be a wonderful bonding experience, and can provide an opportunity for you to be a part of your child’s education. Take time to read together and assemble your banner to start the foundation of reading and writing that will create a love of reading and exciting beginning for your child.

Extension Activities:Go to your public or school library to find books to read together.

Make a list of all the books you and your child read together to see how many you can read in a year.

Find words in the stories that you read that you can write or draw on your banner under or next to the letter of the alphabet that the word starts with.
