Music in the Young Life Club

Club Principles to Remember…

·  Proclaim and glorify Christ in every way Col 3:23, 4:5

·  Target the farthest kid out. Col. 4:5-6

·  It’s a sin to bore kid with gospel. John 10:10

·  Strive for excellence/show extravagant love. Col. 3:23, John 12:1-8

We do music in Club…

·  To get everyone engaged in the meeting

·  To unify the group

·  To break down “Christian” stereotypes and barriers within kids

·  To have fun

·  To set-up leaders to lead kids

·  To give kids ownership of the Club

·  To set-up the Club talk

(We do NOT put on a concert/performance-we want the crowd to be “centerstage.”)

When selecting songs…

·  Ensure all lyrics and meanings honor God

·  Pick sing-able songs

·  Use medium to slower songs in the middle of Club

·  Use slow and some spiritual songs at end to set-up the talk

·  Assume there are non-Christians in Club so avoid worship and spiritual songs that imply faith on the part of the singer (we do not want to make kids sing something that is not necessary true of themselves)

·  Do not avoid repeating songs week to week- this helps build a Club repertoire

Applications for the Club music team…

·  Take attitude of song facilitators and leaders and not performers

·  Practice well to ensure excellent atmosphere of Club

·  Be fully ready to go (rehearsed, equipment, sound, etc) by Club starting time

·  Have leaders devoted to leading the crowd (this probably will be someone without an instrument) to lead clapping, motions, etc

·  Consider talk topic when choosing songs

A Club music team has clearly done their job excellently when …

·  Kids voices (not the microphone or instruments) is the loudest sound in Club

·  The kids in the back row are engaged in singing and clapping

·  The crowd looks at the song leader and words (not the band or each other)

·  Leaders see song-leading as an opportunity to build leadership/repore w/ kids

·  Kids begin to identify certain songs as “Young Life songs”

·  The overall environment is fun, interactive, unconditional, and excellent

·  The environment just feels right and natural when the speaker begins the talk
