Principal’s Message:

It is hard to believe that we are approaching spring and that we are more than half way through the year! As we enter the final term, students will build on the foundational skills acquired in the first and second terms. Teachers work to further expand student skill sets and to develop deeper levels of understanding. As we approach term three, as partners in learning, parents are strongly encouraged to keep in contact with their child’s classroom teacher regarding their child’s progress.

This year, the Chilliwack School District will enjoy a two-week spring break, the break encompasses Good Friday and Easter Monday. We will return to school on Tuesday March 28th. We wish all of our Robertson families a wonderful break and Easter vacation.

Term two report cards will be sent home on Thursday March 10th and parents are asked to review their child’s academic successes and to help their child set goals for third term.

Kindergarten Registration 2016-2017

Full Day Kindergarten registration for the 2016-2017 school year is now underway. If your child will be five (5) years of age by December 31, 2016 please come to the school to register. You will need to bring your child’s birth certificate and proof of residence when registering. We are strongly encouraging all families who wish to register at Robertson Elementary to do so as soon as possible…we are filling up quickly!

Are you moving?

We are currently initiating the staffing process for the 2016/17 school year. In order to determine our staffing allocations, it is important that we have accurate enrollment numbers. If you are intending on moving and know that your child (ren) will not be attending Robertson next year, we would certainly appreciate this information and would love to hear from you. Likewise, if your child (ren) will be attending another school in the district, you are strongly encouraged to register at that school as soon as possible. Please contact our office if you know that you will be moving. Thank you.

2016-2017 Budget Process

The Board wishes to ensure parents, staff and partners are aware of the information regarding the proposed Budget 2016/2017, Budget pressures and implications. A public Budget presentation meeting is being held onWednesday, March 9, at the Neighborhood Learning Centre (NLC) in the Chilliwack Secondary School campus, at 7:00 p.m.

Basketball

Our Gr. 5 & 6 boys and girls are beginning their Basketball season. Thank you to Mrs. Kostrzewa and Mr. Lodders for sponsoring our boy’s and girl’s teams!

District Calendar for 2016/17 School Year

The Board wishes to ensure parents, staff and partners are aware of the proposed draft Calendar 2016/2017, and therefore is extending the opportunity for parents, staff and partners to provide feedback. Input and feedback regarding the proposed draft Calendar will be continue to be received until March 3, and the Board will receive a summary of the responses for its deliberations on March 8 at its Regular Board Meeting. Follow the link and provide feedback:http://www.sd33.bc.ca/2016-17-local-school-calendar-draft

Thank you in advance.

Importance of Sleep!

There are a number of studies that connect success in learning to adequate sleep patterns and routines. Scientists have discovered that sleep plays a critical role in immune function, metabolism, memory, learning and other vital functions. It is more difficult to take in new information following a night of inadequate sleep or disturbed sleep. You can help your child(ren) have a successful day at school by ensuring a good night’s sleep.

March News from the Library Mrs. Derhousoff

Author Visits!

We are very excited to host two authors at our school in March. Eric Wilson was here Wednesday, March 2 to speak with Divisions 1-6 about the process of writing a book and his research trip to the Arctic. After Thiessen will be here March 10 to read her book, The Stork and the Sparrow to Divisions 7-11 and answer questions about how she wrote and illustrated her book. We hope our students catch the writing bug and spend some time over Spring Break dabbling in writing.

READ-A-THON:

We are inviting the entire school to be involved in an afternoon marathon of reading on Friday, March 11! The afternoon will begin right after lunch with a school-wide read-a-loud. Afterward, all students will continue reading until their specified goal is met. We are looking forward to an afternoon of fun learning as we promote literacy! Remember that all fundraising toward the Read-a-Thon must be handed in to your child’s classroom teacher by the morning of March 11 to qualify for any of the prize draws. You may return the sponsor sheet and money earlier if you have completed the fundraising.

Super Reader:

For those students who are reading 15 minutes every day, 200 Nights of Reading will be completed over Spring Break. You may bring your signed yellow slip of paper back after Spring Break to collect your 200 Night prize! Our next Kiwanis Super Reader Assembly is scheduled for April 13 at 1:00. Any student who accomplished 100 nights of reading since our last Assembly will be recognized in April.

If you need a new tracking sheet, come see me in the Library or download and print the form from the Library website. http://robertson.sd33.bc.ca

Don’t forget to check out our school Library webpage! Students can look up books in our Library, place books on hold, make book recommendations to their friends and write book reviews.

Office Phone Hours (repeat)

The office telephone hours will be changing to 9am-3pm. Just a reminder that if your child is staying home or will be arriving late to school to inform the office by calling 604-795-5312 and leaving a message on the answering machine or by emailing and the classroom teacher. Our secretary, Mrs. Wodtke, will continue to phone home for unexplained absences as part of Robertson’s safe arrival program. Thank you again for your continued support.
