Principal’s Message

School Organizational Model

Our Staffing Committee, with School Council consultation, has worked hard to plan an organizational model for 2016-2017 academic year that best meets the needs of our students, and the parameters set by the Board. This model was recommended to the Superintendent. Please find below a tentative organizational model for the upcoming school year. This model will remain tentative right up until the end of the first month of the new school year as we are required to meet Ministry demands through reorganization (if necessary). We are confident that the school organizational model outlined below will meet our students’ learning needs and provide them with the best possible learning environment.

Student Placements

Student placements are decided by our Placement Committee, which consists of the sending teachers, receiving teachers, specialist teachers and administration. The members of the committee follow the school’s placement guidelines and have the best interests of the children in mind. The following are examples of our guidelines used by the Placement Committee when placing students into next year’s class groupings. They include:

·  Academic Strengths and Needs

·  Gender Balance

·  Social / Emotional Strengths and Needs

·  Class size

Occasionally, there may be personal information that is unknown to the school staff that may affect the child’s placement. This might include family changes, recent learning assessments or medical situations. Please share this information with your child’s present teacher by May 9, 2016. Thank you for your cooperation in helping us to prepare for next year in a positive and productive way.

Please refrain from making straight grade or staff member requests. These requests are not supported by the guidelines. Thank you.

Chess Club, by Imad, Owais and Vlad

This year the chess clubs (primary and junior) had great success. The team used strategic moves to checkmate their opponents. Our first tournament was held at Ledbury Park PS. The juniors came in 3rd place, and the primary came in 4th place. Seneca Hill PS won the primary and junior divisions. Nicholas from our primary team beat one of their players. After the tournament, the Seneca Hill coach invited us to their school for another tournament. The Seneca Hill tournament was very fun and we were able to take four teams. We played three games each and they provided pizza for us. One of our junior teams placed 2nd and one junior team placed 3rd. In our Primary division, we placed 3rd and 4th. All players received ribbons and they also gave us a beautiful trophy. This year the chess team had a lot of fun. We hope to host Seneca Hill next year!

Co-Ed Volleyball, by Baran

We have had a successful year with our volleyball teams this year. Our first Co-ed game in the North Conference was against Three Valleys PS. We won our first match 25-19 and our second match 25-22. Our second game was against Cassandra PS. They were tough! In our first match we had a lot of amazing plays with spikes and laser serves. We won 25-21. In our second match we were down 15-21 but then we did some amazing plays and came back to win the game and conference. Thank you to all the parent volunteers and teachers. We are representing the North at the City Finals!

Parking Tips

We encourage parent and guardian cooperation to ensure the safety of our students is maintained with regards to dropping off and picking up students. Please review the pick-up, drop-off and parking requests. Your cooperation and understanding are appreciated. Thank you.

Please:

• Car drop off in the loop can occur throughout the day. Use the loop for pick-up and drop-off, and do not park in the loop.

• The parking lot may be closed from 8:20 to 8:50 and 15:00 to 15:30.

• Parents are welcome to use the parking lot when a spot is available.

• Hollywood buses will drop off students using the designated bus zone on Estelle Avenue. Drop-off is supervised by a staff member.

• Children can run quickly behind or between cars, or directly out onto the street in seconds. Supervise your children.

• The parking lot is not designed for a drive through drop-off, and it creates congestion when this occurs.

• Parents are asked to use on-street parking and pick-up their child in the schoolyard at the “meet and greet” area during school hours.

• Follow the Highway Traffic Act and Parking Regulations. Exercise caution when driving around school zones, pedestrians, and cyclists. Be more aware of others as they travel on our streets.

• Shut the engines off to prevent idling.
