Archery GB wants to support Physical Education in Primary Schools because:

  • It is often the first opportunity to take part in physical activity
  • Archery offers schools something different to traditional sports on offer

The Primary school Physical Education staff will benefit from working with Archery GB because:

  • Easy to use resources to introduce archery at Primary level are now available
  • This can develop into introducing the traditional version of the sport through the development of links with local community clubs
  • Young people are encouraged to lead activity through the new Young Leaders course for Arrows

Arrows

  • Provides easy to use resources and shooting equipment
  • Provides a range of inter and intra competition for primary schools
  • Provides a network of community club opportunities for young people
  • Provides support from Archery GB staff to support the work in schools

The Arrows Offer in Detail

Arrows has been created for primary schools to introduce young children to archery in a fun and safe way. It has been designed to be delivered by teachers and sports coordinators who have no formal archery experience or qualification.

This 'mini' version of archery provides teachers with child-friendly equipment and resources to get you started quickly and easily. Simple ideas for activities and competitions are provided that can be used in PE lessons, across the curriculum, in out of hours clubs and as part of the School Games. The equipment and resources provided make it possible for teachers to deliver archery in almost any setting in school.

Teacher and Coach Education

  • There is no training required to deliver Arrows.
  • Young people (14-19 years) can access Arrows Young Leaders Award course.
  • The course prepares young leaders to become the driving force behind setting up their own Arrows Archery club or festival at their local primary school;

  • A Guide for Teachers: Includes all information needed to deliver Arrows.
  • Eight activity cards: Provides ideas to get sessions going straight away.
  • Festival card: Provides competitive option that is also the format for the School
  • The equipment has been designed to enable teachers to deliver the sport in a safe, exciting, environment either indoors or outside

Games at Primary level

  • Reference card: For a quick reminder of the key things for your sessions.
  • Online videos: Two short videos at go through some of the detail in the Guide for Teachers to provide further support.

Competition

  • Festival card included in Arrows pack provides suggestions for competition which also ties in with the format for the School Games at Primary level.

Exit Routes

  • Extra-curricular (afterschool or lunch) are supported by teachers and/or Young Leaders to link into the network of community clubs
  • A network of community clubs affiliated to AGB providing a range of shooting opportunities for Young People 8 years plus.

Support

  • Coaching: Direct coaching support may be available via a network of AGB accredited coaches in local community clubs
  • Archery GB staff: National managers are available for support and advice
