President Uhuru lays foundation stone for the UoN Towers

President Uhuru Kenyatta lays foundation stone for the University of Nairobi Towers. Looking on is Vice-Chancellor, Prof. George Magoha.

The University of Nairobi was today honoured to host the President of the Republic of Kenya, H.E. Hon Uhuru Kenyatta when he laid the Foundation stone for the University of Nairobi Towers and planted a commemorative tree.

The function was also graced by Deputy President, Hon. William Ruto, Her Excellency, the First Lady Margaret Kenyatta, Cabinet Secretary, Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Jacob Kaimenyi, Cabinet Secretary, Internal Security, Joseph Ole Lenku.

During his address, President Kenyatta described the University of Nairobi as an institution known as an esteemed alma mater to many, noting that the University is known for her excellent tradition of scholarship and integrity, a beacon and point of reference in the academic arena, providing manpower that has been crucial in meeting the needs of the nation.

President Kenyatta commended the University management and the council for their effort and their resilience in raising funds from internal sources towards the construction of the towers. He noted that the towers are an amazing reflection of the position of the University of Nairobi as the leader in architectural thought, innovation and champion towards the provision of environmentally friendly solutions.

While reflecting on his first time at the University when he reported as a first year student, Deputy President Hon. Ruto, said that the momentum created for the empowerment of citizens through education is powerful and that UoN is contributing to the economic development of the nation. He noted that capacity building is key in addressing the gaps in skills and technical competency in various fields.

Speaking during the ceremony, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. George Magoha thanked the President and his team for honouring the University by gracing the ceremony. Prof. Magoha thanked the team led by Former Chancellor, Dr. Joe Wanjui and Dr. John Simba for working relentlessly and conceptualizing the idea of the towers. In addition, Prof. Magoha challenged other Kenyans to come forward and support the University in its endeavour to build capacity and increase access to higher education and training.

Cabinet Secretary, Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Jacob Kaimenyi, University of Nairobi Chancellor, Dr. Vijoo Rattansi and Chairman of Council, Dr. Idle Farah also spoke during the auspicious occasion.

President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto join the University of Nairobi Choir in song and dance during the ceremony.
