Dear New Member,
Welcome to the Avon Fishing Association, we hope that you will enjoy many hours fishing on this hidden treasure.
The River Avon is a lovely little river that rises in the granite bogs of the Southern Moor, empties into the Avon Dam and then rapidly tumbles its way down to the village of South Brent. The Association fishing begins on the left bank below the bridge
that crosses the old A38 road and continues with a similar haste as a mixture of boulder bedded runs, deep pots, bare rock and the odd larger pool. Both banks are well wooded most of the way from Brent through to Avonwick station. Below Loddiswell,
the river starts to meander through meadows ending at the tidal weir near Aveton Gifford, along this lower water the Association also has access to several beats. In the autumn the River Avon can be a raging torrent and yet in summer changes to a mere brook. Fishing is predominantly for brown trout. It is, however, interesting water and also provides salmon fishing in the autumn and delightful dry fly fishing during the summer, when there is also ample opportunity for night Sea Trout fishing too.

• Comprehensive notes on access to Avon Fishing http://www.avonfishingassociation.co.uk/afa-access.shtml are available with photographs showing access points to beats, these are highly recommended reading for new comers to the River Avon. Maps of the AFA Fishing Water are also available and are updated on line each year together with any other useful information. Our Chairman, John Roberts, kindly offers to take new members on an introductory walk to familiarize them with the river; please contact John to arrange a date on . Dennis Dawes is also available on 01548 853510 for beat walks.
• The Avon Fishing Association Rules. Members are expected to be familiar with the rules, by which they are bound, and to complete the “return of fish” to the Secretary by the end of each year. Association membership is usually between 55 – 60
members. An AGM is held on the last Tuesday in January, a social event is held each year when we also host Riparian Owners who grant the Association fishing rights. Members are encouraged to participate in the river bank maintenance annual working
parties during Feb/Mar; details sent by email.
• AFA Committee agendas, minutes and Annual Chairman Reports are also available on line and provide a useful summary of current Association activities, annual fish returns and other matters of interest to members. The Chairman will send letters as
necessary to members seeking consultation on matters or to advise on a range of local matters, for example, there is a note urging members to comply with an EA recommendation to return 70% of salmon and Sea Trout.
The Committee is keen that AFA members should be part of the river community and therefore please introduce yourself to other members and riparian owners that you meet on the river. Courtesy to all who share the river is our hallmark; it can take 10 years to get some fishing, but only 10 minutes to lose it by an offhand remark to a riparian owner.
