Instructors:

Matt Lydum,PhD, researches, writes, and teaches on issues related to human performance with a focus on educating coaches to provide developmentally appropriate experiences. He is Level 2 certified in Throws, Jumps, Combined Events and Sprints, Hurdles, & Relays. He is the project writer for the Human Kinetics text Coaching Youth Track & Field and serves as Director of the USATF Level 2 – Youth Specialization Course. He served on the Team USA Coaching Staff for the 2007 & 2009 IAAF World Youth Championships. Lydum was the 1998 USOC delegate for the International Olympic Academy and has coached numerous All-Americans at the small college and youth levels.

Diane Wholey is in her 16th year at Texas Tech University currently serving as Assistant Athletic Director. As a coach, she has worked with numerous All-Americans, conference champions, and record holders in the explosive power events. She is an active leader in the sport nationally and internationally having served on Team USA staffs for 2 decades including service as Head Women’s Manager for the 2010 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Doha, Qatar; 2011 IAAF World Outdoor Championships in Daegu, South Korea; and the 2012 Olympic Games in London. She is a Level 2 Instructor in jumps and combined events.

Todd Hierlmaier has been a high school cross-country coach for 13 years, with dozens of athletes over 4.0 GPA. He is a USTFCCCA certified Endurance Specialist and USATF Level 2 certified in Youth, Endurance, and Combined Events. In addition, Hierlmaier was the 2012 Minnesota Ultimate Runner Series Champion,2009 Minnesota Class AA Cross Country coach of the year and has received multiple MN 3AA Section Coach of the year honors.

Level 1 Information:

USATF Coaching Education Level 1 program is a starting point for all track and field coaches. One of the objectives is to put all coaches on common platform (i.e., speaking the same language). The Level 1 program covers all events in a foundational manner by emphasizing fundamentals, rules, safety/risk management, and instruction techniques. Level 1 prepares individuals to coach junior high school, high school, club, and age group athletes.

·  Level 1 Schools are two or two and-a-half-day courses (21.5 hours), including both classroom instruction and hands-on training. Attendance at all sessions is required.

·  After the school, participants must complete an online exam that covers event-related and sport science subjects.

·  Upon attending the School and passing the exam, participants will be issued a Level 1 Certificate of Completion.
