FREE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL AT

SANTIAGO CANYON COLLEGE

March 15--Santiago Canyon College in Orange is pleased to invite the community to attend its annual international film festival. The free film showings will be held on Friday, April 16; Saturday, April 17; Friday, April 23; and Saturday, April 24, all at 6:00 p.m. in room D-101.

In addition to free admission, complimentary parking and refreshments will also be provided. Faculty members from the languages department will introduce the following films and lead discussion afterward:

  • Friday, April 16: GERMINAL (France 1993, color, French with English sub-titles)—Based on the novel by Émile Zola and starring Gérard Depardieu, Miou-Miou, Jean Carmet and Jean-Roger Milo, GERMINAL is a spell-binding epic set in Northern France in the 1880’s. It tells the story of a miners’ strike that destroys one family, yet plants the seeds of social change for future generations.
  • Saturday, April 17: IL POSTINO/THE POSTMAN (Italy 1994, color, Italian with English sub-titles)--Mario is a simple fisherman turned mailman who falls in love with the most beautiful woman in his village, but is too shy to tell her how he feels. When a famous poet moves to town, Mario is inspired. Directed by Michael Radford and starring Philippe Noiret, Massimo Troisi and Maria Grazia Cucinotta, IL POSTINO won an Academy Award for best dramatic score.
  • Friday, April 23: FRIDA (Mexico 2002, color, English)--Set against a political backdrop, FRIDA portrays the life of famous Mexican painter Frida Kahlo

(played by Salma Hayek). Frida’s art and the complex and enduring relationship with her mentor and husband Diego Rivera (played by Alfred Molina) take center stage in the movie. The circle of famous artists and political figures depicted includes David Alfaro Siqueiros (Antonio Banderas), Nelson Rockefeller (Edward Norton) and Leon Trostsky (Geoffrey Rush).

  • Saturday, April 24: RAISE THE RED LANTERN (China 1991, color, Mandarin with English sub-titles)--This movie is a sweeping tale of passion, aspiration, dreams and desire set in 1920’s China. It depicts the battle of wills among the four wives of a wealthy man, all seeking to keep their husband’s attention and the privileges accorded to the preferred wife. Directed by Yimou Zhang, RAISE THE RED LANTERN received an Academy Award nomination for best foreign language film in 1992.
