Have you started planning for your future? The time is NOW!!

  • Update or create your resume. See Mrs. Chunn or Mrs. Overbagh for help.
  • Take the ACT and/or SAT
  • Visit college campuses and/or college websites
  • Begin applying to colleges
  • Apply for scholarships. There are scholarships out there with deadlines every month. Start searching! Also, come by the guidance office and check out our scholarship board.
  • If you’re interested in the military and have not taken the ASVAB,we will be giving that here at OBHS on November 1.
  • Plan your finances carefully. Upcoming expenses include college application fees, prom, caps and gowns, invitations, senior pages for the yearbook, ACT and/or SAT fees, t-shirts, may day, and your yearbook.

Be A Mississippi Scholar: Requirements: College Prep Curriculum, 40 hours of community service during 4 years of high school, 18 ACT composite, 2.5 gpa, 95% school attendance during 4 years of high school, no out-of-school suspensions. Pick up your application today!

Athletes: You must register with the NCAA Clearinghouse if you are planning on playing a sport in college. Visit The fee to register is $65* (cost subject to change without notice). You may be able to receive a fee waiver if you have already received a fee waiver for the ACT or SAT.

Reminder: If you are offered any scholarships, even if you don’t plan on accepting it, please turn in a copy of the scholarship offer to Mrs. Chunn. You can start doing this right away. You will be recognized at Awards Night, and the amount goes into the total monies offered to the Class of 2017. We would like to surpass the Class of ‘16’s $11,000,000!

Important Dates:

  • Senior Parent workshop on Financial Aid & the new FAFSA Tuesday, Sept 13 at 6 PM
  • Senior Jersey Deadline – September 16
  • DeSoto County College Fair – September 26 at Southaven High School
  • Senior picture deadline (tux/drape) – October 23
  • Color casual pictures are $10. We will accept pictures from photographers other than Holland this year.Deadline October 28
  • Yearbooks are $60 now, $65 in Oct. You can reserve yours for a $20 deposit.
  • Senior yearbook ad deadline - TBD
  • Cap & Gown/Invitation Ordering information – November 9 8:45. Plan on a $100 deposit

College Information and Dates:

DeltaStateUniversity –

November 1 is priority deadline for scholarships, Feb 1 is final deadline. Academic scholarships start with 22 ACT

and a 3.0 gpa. Pig Pick event is September 24

University of Southern Mississippi – Senior visit days – October 1 and November 5. For merit scholarships deadline

is Dec 1 – you must have appliedAND admitted by Dec 1! New: merit scholarships begin with 21 ACT and 3.0 gpa.

MississippiStateUniversity –December 1st Priority Deadline for scholarships; 24 on ACT starts academic

scholarships. Scholarship and applications are open now . Must be admitted in order to apply for scholarships.

Fall Visit Days – October 10, October 24 and November 11.

METP program available if you want to be a math or English teacher and have a 28 ACT. Full tuition.

Ole Miss –January 5th Priority Deadline; Fall visit day is October 15 – Ole Miss vs Memphis football game included!

METP program available if you want to be a math or English teacher and have a 28 ACT. Full tuition.

University of Memphis – December 1st Priority Deadline; Must be admitted by Dec 1 to qualify for scholarships.

Fall visit days are October 22 and November 5 8:30 – 12 Noon.

Northwest –Online application available now!Scholarship deadline April 1st; only need final transcript

20+ on ACT – automatic scholarship. Amounts vary. 15-19 ACT – apply for Leadership Scholarship.

“Go West” event is Oct 26, 27 or 28- meet faculty, narrow field of interest, college experience info

University of TN Martin– Lowered out of state tuition (sliding scale according to ACT), Fall Preview days September 24,

October 29 and November 12. Priority deadline for scholarships is Feb 1. New programs of study: Rodeo,

Equestrian, Rifle and Beach Volleyball.

University of TN Chattanooga– Scholarship app deadline is January 10. Saturday tours September 10 and October 1.

Blue & Gold Preview Days are November 12 and March 4. Out of state tuition only 25% with 24 ACT and 3.5

gpa; out of state tuition waived with 27 ACT and 3.5 ACT.

ArkansasStateUniversity – No out of state tuition for DeSotoCounty students. Fall preview days September 24,

October 8, October 29 and November 5. Home to the #1 nursing program in Arkansas.

LeMoyneOwenCollege – (in Memphis) No out of state tuition. Tours given Monday through Friday. New dorms open!

BaptistCollege of Health Sciences – Priority admission deadline is March 1. No out of state tuition. Acceptance begins

with an 18 ACT

ChristianBrothersUniversity – Preview days are September 16, October 1, November 1. MS Scholarships of $3,000

given. No out of state tuition.

Tennessee State University–

No out of state tuition for DeSoto County students.
