LPC Seminar Abstracts

Preparing for Plant Retirements:

Trajectory shows that MI is facing a shortage of Water Professionals. Preparing for plant retirements is of key importance. Facilities hiring interns and providing tours are ways to bridge the gap. You will have the unique opportunity to hear what works and how to set up a program at your facility through various means. The more you know about this topic the better prepared you will be for the future of the water industry.

He Shortage:

The price of He is on the rise and the US supply is running dangerously low. When it runs out He will have to be imported and prices will increase even more. This affects laboratories that analyze organics by GC-MS. Labs can proactively convert a GC-MS to H as a carrier gas, but there are many things to consider when making the change.

Safety Slacking:

The presentation will discuss requirements of a Laboratory Chemical Hygiene Plan and basic laboratory safety (Hygiene, Chemical Handling, Ventilation and Engineering Controls, Safety Inspections, PPE and Good Work Practices). This will include real life experience in a Water/Wastewater Laboratory at a Michigan VPP Star Facility.

How to Stay Out of Jail:

A good name is worth more than gold, and few things can blacken a name more than jail time. Deciding to be dishonest the first time can start a person down a pathway that leads to imprisonment or fines. Integrity in the laboratory and in the water industry matters. Detective Janet Erlandson can tell you why.

Green chemistry 101: going upstream against pollution

In the past 25 years a new color emerged among the many nuances chemistry accustomed us with: green. Green chemistry is the conscious approach to design chemicals, engineer their production from laboratory to scaled-up industrial processes, and project their lifetime from cradle to cradle, with the health of all life forms and the environment in mind.

A brief history of green chemistry’s birth and its principles, its status today, and its contribution to a sustainable society will be presented. Connections and significance for water environment, water analysis, and the water quality professionals involved in monitoring this invaluable resource will be discussed.

Comparison of Coliform Media:

Not many labs have the time, money, or staff to compare all the different types of media that is out there for analyzing samples for T. Coliform/E. Coli. This presentation is an overview of a study performed by the AWWA LPC comparing the various media for cost, ease of use, training time, procedure, etc.
