Preparing for Medical Externship 2016

Dates

•Winter – January 4 to March 11, 2016

•Spring – March 28 to June 3, 2016

•Summer – June 20 to August 26, 2016

•Fall – September 26- December 2, 2016

Term prior to leaving campus

  • Update OHA prerequisites – most sites require current TB and flu shot (annuals). All need current CPR (within last two years and must be current for duration of your externships).
  • If you need to check on dates for CPR – Liz can help.
  • May have to update other pieces (e.g. 10 panel drug screen) - Susan will notify.
  • Determine competencies you need to get during your externships (check your cumulative evaluation on Calipso) – meet with Jen if these cannot be done in your assigned placements (e.g. have adult competencies and will only be in peds settings)
  • Contact your externship supervisor(s) ~ 4-5 weeks prior to start
  • Let them know you are excited to start
  • Confirm the date/time/place for the first day(& work hours)
  • Dress code
  • Anything special you need to do to prepare? What tests and interventions would they like you to review prior to starting?

Over the Break

  • Read Medical Externship Handbook – Link on infoCDS
  • Get ready for medical setting
  • Organize your notes from class
  • Study the tests and interventions requested by your supervisor(s)
  • Be prepared to do assessments without using standardized assessment batteries
  • Review medical abbreviations

At the Beginning of Rotation

•Bring your lunch – you may not have an opportunity to go get anything

•Discuss plan for the term with your supervisor

•What will be your level of involvement – during the first few weeks, later in the term, size of caseload?

•Commonly used assessments

•Commonly used treatment approaches

•Discuss competencies/hours

•Ask what type of clients/patients will you be able to work with

•Let your supervisor know what areas are still missing

•Hours needed in this setting

•Supervisors will have access to infoCDS – show your supervisor the page relating to Medical Externship

•Point out: Deadlines, Medical Externship Handbook, Vita, step-by step instructions for Calipso

Calipso

  • Lindsay Elliott, Practicum and Contract Coordinator, will email registration information with one-time PIN number to supervisor (if they have not used Calipso before)
  • Offer your help with registration - Supervisor should register for Calipso during the first 4 weeks (if they wait until midterm a new PIN will have to be issued – please help them do at start of term)
  • Go to
  • Click on the “Supervisor” registration link located below the login button.
  • Supervisor to complete the requested information and click “Register.”
  • On the following screen, again supervisor to complete the requested information and click “Save” at the bottom of the page. A “Registration Complete” message will be displayed and you will automatically be logged into CALIPSO.
  • For subsequent logins, supervisor has to use 8-digit ASHA number and password that she/he created the registration process

Keeping Track of Clock Hours

  • Use paper form – sidebar on infoCDS under Practicum
  • Adults -
  • Peds -
  • Enter hours every day and have supervisor initial
  • Submit clock hours to supervisor at end of term (or at midterm and end of term … ask supervisor)
