Course Description:

This course involves instruction in beginning golf skills, scoring, rules and etiquette.

Pre- requisites:

None

Required textbook and supplies:

  • There is not a textbook required for this class.
  • Golf clubs are required. Some clubs may be available at the course.
  • There will be a $65 fee required for driving range, playing and lessons.
  • Students are responsible for their own transportation to the golf course.

Inclement Weather:

  • Since this is an outdoor class, bad weather may force class cancellation.
  • Students will not be responsible for making up classes canceled by the instructor due to inclement weather.
  • If you have a question about a possible class cancellation, call the instructor’s cell phone (420-9805) or Canyon Springs Golf Course after 12:15 pm on the day of the class.

Policies and Procedures:

  • Attendance is crucial to success in this class. You cannot expect to pass this class without attending. If you are more than 15 minutes late, an absence will be recorded for that day.
  • Grading will be judged on attendance, knowledge of rules and etiquette, and willingness to participate during each class.
  • Cell phones need to be turned off while at the golf course.
  • Starting March 11, class will meet at Canyon Springs Golf Course.
  • Starting with the March 11th class, you will need your golf clubs.
  • Only students enrolled in the class are allowed to attend. Please do not bring your children, spouse, friend, etc. to class.
  • You are expected to demonstrate cooperation and behavior befitting a college student or you will be asked to leave the golf course. You will not be allowed to return to class until you and I have discussed the situation.
  • Please do not be afraid to ask questions or ask for help.
  • I will be at the golf course 30 minutes before the start of each class if you need to see me for any reason.

Intended Student Learning Outcomes:

Learning Outcome 1:Students will demonstrate appropriate safety practices.

Outcome Assessment:The instructor will continually assess and correct students’ safety knowledge and techniques. Students will complete an online survey about safety practices.

Learning Outcome 2:Students will demonstrate a progression of chipping and

pitching skills.

Outcomes Assessment:The instructor will record the number of successful chipping/pitching attempts from various distances. A successful attempt is within one club length of the hole.

Learning Outcome 3:Students will demonstrate a progression of putting skills.

Outcomes Assessment:The instructor will record the number of successful putting attempts from various distances. A successful attempt is within two feet of the hole.

Learning Outcome 4.Students will demonstrate knowledge of golf rules, terminology, equipment, and etiquette.

Outcomes Assessment:Students will score a minimum of 80% on end-of-semester written evaluations of rules, terminology, equipment and etiquette.

Grading:

  • Grades will be based on attendance, participation, and knowledge of golf.
  • Attendance -- each class will be worth 30 points
  • Participation – each class will be worth 0 - 10 points
  • Testing on rules and etiquette – maximum of 100 points

666 - 740 points = A

592 - 665 points = B

518 - 591 points = C

444 - 517 points = D

0 - 443 points = F

Student e-mail:

E-mail is the primary source of written communication with all CSI students.

Students automatically get a CSI e-mail account when they register for courses. Messages from instructors and various offices will be sent to the students’ CSI accounts (not their personal e-mail).

It is the student’s responsibility to check their CSI e-mail accounts regularly.

Online Course Evaluation Statement:

Students are strongly encouraged to complete evaluations at the end of the course. Evaluations are very important to assist the teaching staff to continually improve the course. Evaluations are available online at: Evaluations open up two weeks prior to the end of the course. The last day to complete an evaluation is the last day of the course. During the time the evaluations are open, students can complete the course evaluations at their convenience from any computer with Internet access, including in the open lab in the Library and in the SUB. When students log in they should see the evaluations for the courses in which they are enrolled. Evaluations are anonymous. Filling out the evaluation should only take a few minutes. Your honest feedback is greatly appreciated!
