  1. Revision of Delegation Table to expand and clarify direction for NG and G-tube feedings.

-Attended nurse practice meeting with the Kansas Board of Nursing along with Joann Wheeler and Chris Tuck on March 25th

-On June 18, Chris Tuck informed us that the KSNO provided language was approved, and the revised chart should be posted on the Kansa Board of Nursing Website by early to mid-July.

-The revised language, replacing one former row of the table with four rows, is as follows:

  1. Out-of-State Field Trips

-Continued to research out-of-state field trips. Letters to the boards of nursing in New York and Texas have both confirmed allowing temporary practice in their state by an RN accompanying students on a field trip.

-The March 2014 NASN School Nursefeatured an article on concerning out-of-state field trips.

  1. Editor NASN School Nurse – In my role as editor, I attended the NASN Conference in San Antonio and attended SIG meetings and the EAB meeting for the Journal of School Nursing.

-Highlights of the NASN conference were as follows:

  • Announcement of the first set of Standardized data sets for school nurses. An article in the September 2014 School Nurse will list the data sets.
  • Beverly Bradley’s key note presentation on the youth risk behaviors focusing on the top 3 risks most associated with academic failure in descending order: tobacco use, sexual behaviors contributing to unintended pregnancy and STDs, and unhealthy dietary behaviors.
  • I encourage all nurses to bookmark the following website: that provides videos and templates for supplies, steps, and special considerations for health procedures routinely provided in the school setting organized by body system. The WISHeS Project is a statewide collaborative project aimed at improving school health services in Wisconsin public schools. The Wisconsin Public Health Association (WPHA) and the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) were awarded a 5 year grant by the Healthier Wisconsin Partnership Program, a component of the Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin endowment at the Medical College of Wisconsin. The goals of the WISHeS project are to improve the capacity of Wisconsin school districts and increase the competency of the individuals providing health services in those schools. The project is accomplishing those goals through the development a School Health Services Assessment Tool that evaluates the status of school health services in Wisconsin and the creation of tools and resources to meet needs identified through the assessment. The resources developed as a result of the assessment will ultimately benefit school children who are greatly impacted by the decisions that schools make.
