Instructions:

Write answers for the following questions/instructions. Your answers should be written in analytic paragraph structure and include:

·  Evidence from prescribed text (Robinson Crusoe) - and one text of your own choice – which represent the cultural and social values of ‘The Enlightenment’

·  Explanation of the effect of the language forms and features used in the evidence. eg: “…the metaphor in “______” represents the enlightenment values of scientific reason above religious dogma.”

TASK:

1.  Describe the effects the enlightenment would have on the social values of English society.

2.  Explore the ways that the expanding middle class or bourgeoisie in England had influence on the broader society.

3.  Why would leisure and happiness become so central to the values of England and Europe?

4.  Defoe was from the bourgeoisie classes. He made his way in the world through business acumen and hard work. Even when bankrupt he worked to pay off his creditors. What does this say about the values and expectations of 18th England?

Word limit – no more than 300 words per answer (in Analytic-Paragraph structure)
