Prevalence of Co-Occurring Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders Among Individuals Served by the Idaho Substance Use Disorders Treatment Program
Preliminary Analysis of GAIN-SS Records for Years 2005-2008
Purpose: Data from GAIN-SS records obtained from individuals accessing Idaho Substance Use Disorders Treatment Program services for the years 2005 through 2008 were analyzed for the prevalence of co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.
Limitations: The data were collected during a telephonic interview utilizing standardized procedures. While the GAIN-SS has excellent sensitivity and specificity, it is not a diagnostic tool. The data are, therefore, subject to a self-report bias.
Delimitation: Only those GAIN-SS with completed responses to questions 1 and 3 were included in this analysis. There were a total of 29,545 GAIN-SS conducted and 19,622 had complete responses.
The number of GAIN-SS instruments completed for each year are:
2005 – 577 (November and December)
2006 – 8962
2007 – 7563
2008 – 2520 (January through May)
n=19,622 total valid GAIN-SS
For the purposes of this analysis, co-occurring disorders were defined as positive responses to one or moreof the sub-questions of the GAIN-SS screening questions 1 (mental health disorders) and 3 (substance use disorders).
Dennis, Chan, and Funk (2006) found that for both adolescents and adults the 20-item total disorder screener (TDScr) and its 4 5-item sub-screeners have good internal consistency [alpha of .96] on the total screener, were highly correlated (r = .84 to .94) with the 123-item scales in the full GAIN-I, had excellent sensitivity (90% or more) for identifying people with a disorder, and excellent specificity (92% or more) for correctly ruling out people who did not have a disorder.
Summary:
For the period studied, the subjects reported a 72.9% (15,867 individuals) rate of co-occurring disorders within the past year.The subjects also reported an 83.8% (17,330 individuals) rate of co-occurring disorders during their lifetime.
Adults report a 74.3% rate of co-occurring disorders within the past year, and a lifetime rate of 85.9%.Children (12-17 years of age) report a 60.6% rate of co-occurring disorders with in the past year, and a lifetime rate of 66.2%.
Females report a 80.1% co-occurring rate within the past year, and a lifetime rate of 90.2%. Males report a 68.1% rate within the past year, and a lifetime rate of 79.6%.
