Pre-school teacher / Deputy Nursery Manager

Job Description and Profile

PURPOSE OF POST: To assist the manager with the running of the nursery and to ensure the successful delivery of both the Pre Birth to Three curriculum and The Curriculum for Excellence.

MAJOR TASKS/JOB ACTIVITIES

Managing people:

·  Working with the Manager to follow company procedures to ensure effective recruitment of employees.

·  Supporting students, volunteers and regular visitors to the nursery.

·  Identifying and addressing staff training needs in liaison with the Manager.

·  Supporting staff to ensure their performance is effective and in line with company Policies and Procedures and if necessary invoking the company disciplinary process.

·  Carrying out disciplinary procedures and undertaking where necessary.

·  Evaluate learning and teaching in the nursery.

·  Supporting the Manager in maintaining appropriate levels of qualified/unqualified employees within the nursery.

·  Deploying staff effectively to maintain the correct staff ratios.

·  Supporting the Manager in facilitating and attending regular internal and external training.

Managing resources:

·  To organise the nursery environment

·  To select and use age appropriate resources

·  Ensure the playrooms resources are of a safe and well maintained state.

·  Aid staff in the placement and obtainment of new resources.

Managing information:

·  To provide relevant and accurate information to the nursery management team as required.

·  Endure that observations, assessments, reporting and recording procedures are carried out.

·  Maintain and develop children’s records such as Children’s profiles, Summative reports and Transition records.

·  Aid staff in reporting to parents on their child’s progress.

Managing Finance:

·  To supervise, recommend and evaluate the purchasing of new resources.

Planning:

·  To aid staff in planning children’s activities based on a child centred approach using the appropriate early years frameworks and policies.

·  To be involved in the production of the educational development plan.

·  Working in collaboration with the staff team to identify priorities in the educational development plan.

·  Develop and implement both the Pre Birth to Three curriculum and The Curriculum for Excellence.

Managing operations:

·  Deputising for the Nursery manager and being responsible for the daily running and administration of the nursery during the Manager’s absence.

·  Supporting the Manager in developing and maintaining links within the local community to create a positive nursery profile.

·  Supporting the Manager in creating and maintaining successful and professional partnerships with parents/carers

·  To be aware of and work within the standards and requirements of the Care Inspectorate, Education Scotland and Edinburgh Council.

·  To be a role model for staff and lead by example by:

  1. Interacting effectively with children
  2. Encouraging and facilitating new learning experiences
  3. Developing and nurturing children’s learning and development
  4. Pro-actively involving parents in their children’s learning

Managing Health and Safety:

·  Compliance with health and safety legislation.

·  Maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness/tidiness within the nursery.

·  Carrying out health and safety checks.

Qualifications

·  Degree in Teaching, Childhood studies, or equivalent childcare degree.
