Pre-school Manager Job Description

Job title: Pre-school Manager

Salary: £19,500-23,000 per annum (mostly within the school term times)

Responsible to:Chair of management committee

Responsible for: 9 Pre-school members of staff

Purpose of the job:To provide safe, high quality education and care for up to 50 pre-school children and maintain a stimulating and enjoyable environment, working within the Pre-school business plan and Early Years Foundation Stage framework. To fulfil legal and statutory requirements; to lead and manage staff on a day-to-day basis; to contribute and to implement pre-school policies.

Main duties

  1. Lead the planning of safe, creative and stimulating opportunities according to children’s needs and interests to fulfil the requirements of the EYFS and to monitor the effectiveness of the pre-school curriculum
  2. Ensure the development of an annual business plan in partnership with the management committee
  3. Develop and maintain good relationships and communication with parents/carers to facilitate meeting the needs of each child, including organising meetings to update and involve parent/carers in their child’s learning
  4. Actively promote the pre-school to ensure that vacant places are filled, and that services are marketed and advertised so that the pre-school runs to full capacity
  5. Recruit, induct, supervise and contribute to performance management of staff according to policies and procedures and ensure the correct staffing:child ratios are met
  6. Supervise the daily programme of pre-school activities and events
  7. Implement robust systems of observation and record keeping so that children's progress and achievements are effectively and regularly assessed; to monitor the effectiveness of assessment procedures
  8. Organise the key person system and to effectively supervise staff on a daily basis; to be responsible for monitoring the quality of teaching; to participate in staff appraisals and to identify training needs
  9. Be the lead person for child protection/safeguarding in the pre-school and to ensure that any child protection concerns are acted upon immediately and appropriately
  10. Ensure that the pre-school is a safe environment for children, staff and others, that equipment is safe, standards of hygiene are high, safety procedures are implemented at all times and fire drills are regularly practiced
  11. Manage and monitor the pre-school budget.
  12. Liaise with the management committee, extended services, Ofsted and other professionals as necessary and ensure that all legal and statutory requirements are implemented; to provide reports as required
  13. Ensure all children have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop
  14. Draft and implement all pre-school policies and procedures and ensure that staff comply with them at all times
  15. Chair regular staff meetings
  16. Contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school
  17. To attend in-service and external training and meetings as required
  18. To supervise and lead action plans relating to accreditation modules
  19. To undertake any other reasonable duties as directed by the directors/parent committee, in accordance with the pre-school business plan/objectives
