Pre-Emergent Shared Reading – 4 Day Lesson Framework

**Each day read/reread with prosody- Inviting students to share in the reading as familiarity with text grows.**

Day 1
Comprehension
Story Understanding / ● Intro book
● Make predictions
● Read through 1X, pointing with a pointer
● Read again and invite children to join in on easiest parts (or all if text is simple)
● Read it again for children to gain confidence and comfort joining in.
● Discuss elements (setting, characters, events, problem/solution)
● Discuss “big ideas” – Did you like it or not? What was your favorite part? Were their funny parts?
Day 2
Book Handling
Concepts About Print / ● Book Handling: Where to start, front/back, directionality, return sweep, print contains a message, left page then right, top to bottom, etc.
● CAP: 1:1 or word to word matching, first and last, visual scanning and analysis, punctuation, concepts (letter, letters in words, words in sentences, one/two letters, one/two words, first/last letters
● Discuss Author and Illustrator
● Discuss specific print features
Day 3
Phonemic Awareness / ● Rhyming
● Beginning sounds
● Isolation: individual sounds in words
● Identification: recognizing same sounds in different words
● Categorization: recognizing the word in a set of 3-4 that has the odd sounds
● Blending: combining separate phonemes to form a word
● Segmenting: break word into separate sounds
● Deletion: recognizing the word that remains when a phoneme is removed
● Addition: making a new word by adding a phoneme
● Substitution: substituting one phoneme for another to make a new words
Day 4
Letter
Word Work Vocabulary / ● Letter identification (upper, lower, sound/letter correspondence)
● Add words to word wall (high frequency or words from story)
● Learning new words (expand vocabulary)
Possible Extensions / ● Retelling the story
● Drawing pictures related to text/story
● Talking about pictures with others
● Dictating message to teacher about the story in the picture
● Early attempts with labels, simple messages

Concepts about Print / ● Intro: Today when we read we’re looking at how the words get bigger
● Model: Listen to how I read
● Guided Practice: Lets read it together…
● Independent Practice: Give own copy - point and read
● Closing: Today you practiced reading words louder as they get bigger
Day 3
Phonemic Awareness / ● Intro:Today we are going to practice matching pictures to beginning sounds
● Model: Read first - focus on beginning sounds of transportation items
● Guided Practice: SMARTboard matching
● Independent Practice: Sheet with additional transportation items
● Closing: Today you matched pictures to beginning sounds
