When you have a Double-Entry Journal (DEJ) that means you are to complete 1 entry in your Double Entry Journal pertaining to that element. The entry is due the following school day. On May 18th you may choose the element (character, setting, conflict, etc.)

Literature Circle Roles

InyourLiteratureCircles,you will beresponsible forpreparinginformationfor each meeting accordingtoyour role. For each meeting you will have a different role.

Discussion Leader: Yourjob is to develop alist ofquestionsyou thinkyourgroup should discuss about the assigned section ofthebook. Useyourknowledgeoflevels of questions to createthought-provokingliteral, interpretive, and universal questions. Tryto createquestions that encourageyourgroup to considermanyideas. Helpyourgroup exploretheseimportant ideas and sharetheirreactions. You will bein chargeofleading theday’s discussion.

DictionDetective: Yourjob is to carefullyexaminethediction (wordchoice)in the assigned section. Searchforwords, phrases, and passages that are especiallydescriptive, powerful, funny, thought-provoking, surprising, or even confusing.List thewords or phrases andexplain whyyou selected them. Then,writeyourthoughts about whythe authormight haveselected thesewords orphrases. What is the authortryingto say?How does thediction help theauthor achievehis orherpurpose? What tonedo thewords indicate?

BridgeBuilder: Yourjob is to build bridges between the events ofthebook and other people, places, or events in school, the community, oryourown life.Look for connections between thetext,yourself, othertexts, and theworld. Also, make connections between what has happened beforeand what might happen asthenarrative continues.Lookforthe characters’internal and external conflicts and theways that these conflicts influencetheiractions.

Reporter: Yourjob is to identifyandreport on thekeypoints ofthereading assignment. Makealist orwriteasummarythat describes how thewriterdevelops thesetting, plot, and characters in this section ofthebook. Considerhow characters interact,major events that occur, and shifts in thesettingorthemood that seem significant. Shareyour report at thebeginningofthegroup meetingto helpyourgroup focus on thekeyideas presented in the reading.Likethat ofanewspaperreporter,your report must be concise,yet thorough.

Artist: Yourjob is to create an illustration relatedto the reading.It can beasketch, cartoon, diagram, flow chart, orotherdepiction. You can chooseto illustrateascene, an idea, asymbol, oracharacter. Showyourillustration to thegroup withoutany explanation. Ask eachgroup memberto respond,eitherbymakinga comment or askinga question. After everyonehas responded,youmayexplainyourillustration and answer anyquestions that havenot been answered. *There will only be an Artist in groups of five.
