HEALTH EDUCATIONPROCEDURE

RATIONALE

At Maidstone Intermediate we believe that the Health and Physical Education programme makes a significant contribution to the well-being of students both within and beyond the classroom enabling our students to contribute as successful confident citizens of the world.

PURPOSE

  1. To ensure the seven key areas of learning (mental health, sexuality education, food and nutrition, body care and physical safety, physical activity, sport studies, and outdoor education) are included in the teaching and learning programmes.
  2. To promote the inclusion of the community in the design of the Health Programme
  3. To ensure school compliance with Section 60B of the Education Act 1989, as amended by the Education Standards Act 2001, which outlines the legal requirements for state schools regarding the delivery of the health education components of the relevant national curriculum statements.

GUIDELINES

  1. A programme of topics will be developed prior to each year, taking into consideration the identified needs of the students, and the seven key areas of learning.
  2. Where possible, health topics will be integrated into the wider context for learning that is developed each year.
  3. Health education is an integral part of the Physical Education, Outdoor Education and Food Technology programmes.
  4. The Sexuality Education topic, ‘Changes at Puberty’, will be taught each year.
  5. Teachers will prepare odd/even year lessons for ‘Changes at Puberty’Education.
  6. Individual parents of students may write to the principal to request that their child/children be excluded from specified parts of the health programme related to sexuality education.
  7. The principal will ensure that the student is excluded from the relevant tuition and that the student is supervised during that time.
  8. At least once every two years, the BOT will produce a written statement about how the school will implement health education, the content of the health education programme, and describe in broad terms the health education needs of the school’s students.
  9. At least once every two years the school community will be consulted on the way in which health education is implemented.
  10. The board of trustees will use a method of consultation that it considers will best achieve the purpose of the consultation.
