THE CHALICE

The weekly Sunday Bulletin of St. John’s Episcopal Church

February 8, 2015

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and do not forget all his benefits— who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the Pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good as long as you live so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s (Psalm 103:1-5).

I invite you to feel the love and mercy of God pressing down on you at our worship service this Sunday. Take a moment this morning and make your prayers and supplications known to the Lord. Christ came that we might have life and live it abundantly.

Worship and prayer are the center of everything we do at St. John’s. We give praise and thanks to God for the many blessings that we receive. We join Angels and Archangels and all the company of heaven. Some people ask me why I am such a traditionalist with regard to the liturgy. The reason is that those of us that have worshiped a particular liturgy all our lives are joined with all the people who we love and see no more (the company of heaven). While we might mix in some new music, we sing traditional hymns for those who find deep meaning and connection in our traditional music and liturgy and out of respect for those who can now only join us in spirit.

We will continue to do an occasional service with our Prospect Street Band and we will add a new service in the spring because contemporary music and liturgy also speaks to the hearts of many at this church. The fact that we can open our hearts to different music and liturgy brings us closer to the Kingdom of Heaven. The ability to offer a Rite I service at 8:00, a Rite II service with organ and piano at 10:00, and a Sunday night contemporary service will enable us to touch more people. If we are to reach young adults and the next generation, we will have to be open to “taste and see” new music and liturgy. I see it as a layer in addition to our traditional music and liturgy and not a competing style. The Word of God and Holy Eucharist portions of our services are always the two central aspect of our worship. Some people like French fries and fried chicken and some people like baked chicken and roasted potatoes. It is still meat and potatoes.

Today our choir will introduce Taize chant during the Communion Anthem. I ask you to listen and meditate during this new music. The Taize community in France is a place where over 100,000 young people go on pilgrimage every year. They have an ecumenical outlook and encourage others to live in the spirit of kindness, simplicity and reconciliation. I hope you enjoy both our traditional hymns and the occasional new hymns and styles that we introduce.

In Christ,

Fr. Duncan
