Message from Lay Leader
I (Orval Frahm) have been given the privilege of becoming the lay leader of Prairie View United Methodist Church. The responsibilities of this position are more than I imagined but rest assured that I will do my best to fulfill them. The lay leader represents the congregation in many capacities. He works directly with the pastor to develop and implement the mission and vision of the church. The lay leader serves on several committees, the nominating committee, the finance committee, the administrative council, and the staff parish relations. Additionally, the lay leader represents the congregation at the annual conference in early June.As lay leader, I will do my best to attend these meetings and to be involved. I will support the church and the leadership. It is critically important that all of the committees have a representative (the chair or vice-chair) at the administrative council meeting. This representation will give the board members the information they need to make informed decisions.
Once again, I thank you for the privilege to be lay leader at Prairie View.

HOPE CENTER
615 KANSAS CITY STREET, RAPID CITY SOUTH DAKOTA
The HOPE Center offers basic, unique, and unduplicated services to members of our community in need of assistance. Some of these services include a mail center where individuals without an address may receive mail; necessary for applying for jobs, a phone center that offers individuals a way to receive messages and make local/long distance phone calls, and a storage center for individuals to store a small amount of personal belongings andimportant documents.Hope Center also offers a Laundry Night where homeless people can come and do their washing. Another primary objective of the HOPE Center has been to establish relationships with the disadvantaged in our community so that we may be recognized by them as a trusted source of support. Out of this relationship, built on trust, we hope to be able to offer lifestyle alternatives and a way out of poverty.
Prairie View UMC will partner with the Hope Center this month to help with their sewing ministry. Once a month on Tuesdays Volunteers teach individuals how to sew. People who have clothes that need mending or people interested in learning to sew are given the opportunity. We plan to do this on Tuesday January 31st. That same day we will provide a hot soup lunch for people visiting the center. They are also in need of travel size hygiene products. If you want to help with the sewing and lunch please sign up. If you are working that day and still want to help please bring travel size hygiene products to the church before January 31st. This will give our entire church family an opportunity to invest in this ONE THING!

“An Eternal Resolution?”
Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about our national phenomenon of the New Year’s resolution. It’s a time when we come toward the end of another year and ponder what change we can make in our life to make it more happy, healthy or content. Many times it involves “giving up” something that we know is bad for us. Often, we aspire to “start something” that we believe will lead us toward a better and more fulfilled life. Just one question; does it ever work? How many times have you vowed a resolution on New Years Eve just to break it two or three weeks later? Maybe you tried for two or three months and then just gave up. Why? Was it something that wasn’t really that important anyway, so who cares? Was it something that that was so difficult that it just seemed impossible to attain or overcome? Finally, was it anything that had eternal consequences?
My challenge for myself and all of you this year is to resolve an eternal resolution, one that has a spiritual implication for yourself and those around you beyond this physical life. You will have to do some soul searching though. A place to start is by stepping outside of yourself for a moment and looking at your life as God might view it. If we claim that our faith is the most important aspect of our lives, what evidence do we have for that? If we have a choice between work and worship, which do we choose? If we have a choice between leisure and serving, which do we choose? If students have a choice between sports and homework or learning about God and spending time in community with other believers, which do they choose?
When Jesus was asked what was the greatest commandment, he responded that we are to love the Lord with all our mind soul and strength. Second only to that, is the command to love our neighbor as ourselves. Worship alongside other believers is just one, but a very important way to express our love for the Lord. Making our spiritual development and education a priority is another. As adults, that applies to us, as well as directing the path of our children in attendance of Sunday school and youth group activities.
So this year I would like to propose a radical idea. If you haven’t yet made a resolution for this year (or maybe even if you have), skip all the self-help resolutions of that past and start thinking eternally. Ask yourself what steps you can take to make God the real priority in your life. Seek out new ways to serve and help others to live more abundantly in the knowledge and presence of God’s love. May you then succeed as never before in attaining your resolution for 2017 and into the eternity beyond.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
