HarrowSchool was founded in 1572 by a local yeoman farmer called John Lyon. He was granted a Charter by Queen Elizabeth I to build a school which would provide a good education, free, for 30 boys living in the Parish of Harrow. In addition to providing free education for local boys, John Lyon’s statutes permitted the enrolment of fee paying pupils from outside the parish and they lived in boarding houses. Over the past 400 years the School has become fully boarding and now has over 800 pupils. It is one of the most prestigious independent boys’ schools in the world.

Music is an important part of life at HarrowSchool. 40% of pupils take individual music lessons from the 5 full-time and 40 part-time staff. There is an impressive array of choirs, orchestras, chamber, jazz & rock groups, and these perform in concerts at school and elsewhere. Last year 80 concerts were given, ranging from lunch-hour events at St Mary’s Church, through a choir concert in SpitalfieldsChurch, to the Choral Society Concert in Speech Room with over 300 performers. The MusicSchool was purpose-built in 1894, and is a listed building, with a small concert hall, office, teaching rooms etc. A planning application has been made for a large extension.
