Second Edition
Design Practice Research at RMIT is a longstanding program of research into what venturous designers actually do when they design. It is probably the most enduring and sustained body of research of its kind: empirical, evidence-based and surfacing evidence about design practice. It is a growing force in the world, with a burgeoning program of research in Asia, Oceania and Europe. This book documents some of its past achievements. Two kinds of knowledge are created by the research. One concerns the ways in which designers marshal their intelligence, especially their spatial intelligence, to construct the mental space within which they practice design. The other reveals how public behaviours are invented and used to support design practice. This new knowledge combined is the contribution that this research makes to the field of design practice research.

The lecture will present a selection of projects and built works by Allianss Arhitektid with an attempt to open up a wider context of change in planning issues and dwelling within the past decade. The projects are of very different scale, varying from exhibition projects to private residences and large scale planning proposals. The wider context is firstly that of a radical change from an exhaustive totalitarian planning to a neoliberal non-planning, which has led to an increasing privatisation and fragmentation of the environments and public space in Estonia, but also evident in other transforming societies. After the booming years of 2005-2007 the results of an almost uncontrolled expansion of building fabric need a sober match with the decreasing population and a limited growth in economy that pushes us to rethink the ways we structure territories and use space.
