Coordination of activities of staff employed on programmes and awards directed by the post holder.
Job Purpose: Contribute to the delivery of the Actuarial Science programmes by developing appropriate teaching methods, designing modules and programmes, and delivering and performing a range of teaching and assessment activities at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including lectures, tutorials, problem classes, setting and marking of coursework and examinations, and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate research projects. Enhance the activities of the School of Mathematics in the field of Actuarial Science through active engagement with actuarial employers and professional actuarial bodies.
Key Accountabilities/Primary Responsibilities:
- Contribute to the development of teaching and learning activities in Actuarial Science. Deliver teaching of the highest quality across a range of modules and to all levels, through lectures, tutorials and seminars.
- Take responsibility for overseeing, developing and promoting fresh teaching and learning approaches and material, which create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst students. Directly supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students on research projects, providing expert advice on learning best practice. Identify the learning needs of students and define learning objectives. Promote the use of appropriate media to support student learning. Set and mark coursework and exams, providing constructive feedback to students.
- Design, develop and deliver an innovative range of modules and programmes of study in Actuarial Science, continually monitoring, evaluating and revising them to ensure excellence and coherence identifying areas where current provision is in need of revision or improvement.
- Provide expert advice and subject leadership to other staff and students.
- Take on appropriate coordinating roles to advance student academic development, e.g. act as Head of relevant Teaching Programme, Coordinator of Programmes at undergraduate or postgraduate levels, etc.
- Engage in external academic activities which enhance the School’s national/international profile, e.g. membership of committees of academic or professional bodies, external examining, journal editorships, etc.
- Represent the University in the actuarial community externally through liaison with actuarial employers and professional bodies.
- Plan and coordinate a programme of scholarship and/or research in Actuarial Science. Develop and oversee the application of innovative methodologies and techniques that add to the knowledge and understanding of the subject area.
Internal & External Relationships: (nature & purpose of relationships)
- Teaching, management, administration and other duties will be assigned by the Head of Academic Unit under the advice of the Head of Group and other members of the Mathematics Management Group (MMG).
- The post holder will be a member of the relevant School, Faculty and University committees and Examinations Boards.
- The post holder will be a member of the Southampton Statistical Sciences Research Institute (S3RI).

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience:
Full or partial qualification with the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries or an equivalent professional body.
PhD or equivalent experience in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics or related subject.
Track record of delivering lectures, seminars or CPD relating to different aspects of Actuarial Science
Experience of interaction with actuarial employers and/or professional bodies /
