Lesson 2 – Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act, Part 1
This lesson is designed to be delivered in 40 minutes. Slides can be adjusted or amended as the teacher sees fit or feels appropriate for the class.
Aims and Objectives
By the end of this class, students will be able to:
· Define and distinguish goods and services
· Explain how the Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act 1980 relates to both goods and services
Materials
· Blank “Funnel” graphic organiser (to be photocopied prior to class).
· Lesson 2 PowerPoint
Introduction
Open Lesson 2 PowerPoint and provide an overview for the class of the material to be covered in the lesson (Slides 1 & 2)
Slide 3: In pairs, ask students to differentiate between goods and services, with examples. Reveal the rest of the slide to show the definitions.
Slide 4 - 12: Introduce the Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act 1980 and inform students that the law protects them with regard to goods and services. The Act also sets out the legal responsibilities of retailers when they sell goods and services and this will be explained in the next lesson. Each slide deals with a major provision of the Act. Each should be explained with relevant examples. Ideally the teacher should reveal the first point and ask students for relevant examples before revealing the rest of the slide.
In Slide 8, an example of how "due regard should be given to the purpose that those goods were sold for" is where someone buys high-heel shoes for climbing a mountain, and doesn’t ask if they’re suitable for that purpose – they could therefore have very little comeback if something goes wrong.

Classwork/Homework assignment (depending on timing):
Slide 14: Show “Funnel” graphic organiser. The funnel is used to synthesise information and reduce a lot of information to its core. In the bottom section, students should write “Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act 1980” and in the funnel, they should write the key points contained in the Act.
