Paragraph Structure

Underline the topic sentence in each paragraph.

I. Life at school can be loud and busy. Sometimes I get tired of it. When I want to find a quiet, safe place to relax, I go to the third floor of the library. The third floor has nothing but shelves of old, rare books and unpopular magazines. There are only a few uncomfortable wooden chairs to sit on, and just a few tables for studying. There are no computers and no copy machines, so students don't come to this floor very often. I have heard people say that they do not like the third floor; they think that it's too lonely and dusty. For me, however, it is a pleasant, relaxing, special place. I like the quiet. I like the smell of old magazines. I even like the dust.

2. The Willamette River is an important part of Portland history. In fact, the city would not exist if the river did not exist. Boats carrying products to sell used the Willamette River to travel. This allowed the people living in Oregon and Washington to sell their wood, animal skins, and fish to the traders. In exchange, they bought other things they needed. The river also provided fresh water all year to the people living near it. This water was also used to water the plants that the farmers grew when needed. The river also gave the people of hundreds of years ago a way to travel around the area without roads or cars: instead, they used boats.

Proofreading. Read the paragraph and decide if each underlined verb is correct. If it is correct, write 'C' above the word. If not, draw a line through the verb and write the correct form above it.

Make friends in a new country is not easy to do, but it is possible if you use some simple strategies. One strategy that is helpful is to make an effort to be out in public more often. The more contact you has with people, the more likely you are to finding someone with whom you felt comfortable. Another helpful strategy is to read and learning about current events. This way, when you do met people, you will automatically have something to talk about. If you wanted to make new friends, you only have to keep in mind these simple strategies.
