A “Solid Base” Furnaceman Technologies Course!
This Unique Trade:
Unlike many trades, A.C. refrigeration is unique in that the process takes place “out of sight”. Solving refrigeration problems takes on a "who-done-it" detective process. Often, you can't see what’s going on, you have to use test instruments, gauges, reference data, and your "Solid Base" knowledge of refrigeration to effectively troubleshoot AC systems.
The Refrigeration for AC Course:
During the class, you will be reviewing, time and time again, the basic refrigeration cycle. Students say they actually start thinking like that molecule of refrigerant as they analyze a system. You will cover every nook and cranny of a refrigeration system until you know that system cold. You will be confident as you use terms like: saturation, super heat, sub-cool, de-superheat, flooding, and starving. After completing this "Solid Base" course, you will have just that, a “rock solid base” of technical understanding in A.C. refrigeration.
You Will Gain:
- A solid understanding of absolute & gauge pressure, and how to measure “P” (pressure deferential).
- A solid understanding of sensible & latent heat, and why latent heat is so important in AC.
- A solid understanding of evaporator & condenser coil operation, and what causes inefficiency.
- A solid understanding of the various states refrigerants assume, based on their temperature and pressure.
- A solid understanding of superheating, de-superheating, condensing, evaporating, and sub-cooling.
- A solid understanding of the proper use of a refrigerant “P-T” chart (where they can be used).
- A solid understanding of how fixed bore & TXV metering devices control liquid refrigerant flow.
- A solid ability to accurately calculate superheat and sub-cool values.
- A solid Understanding that all system components respond, in a predictable way, to changes in temperature, pressure, and evaporator loads.

The Instructor:
Tim Reardon (his previous students refer to him as “The Furnaceman”) has been an instructor at several HVAC “post secondary” technical schools. Tim believes knowledge is power, and when it comes to HVAC systems, knowledge gives you the power to solve problems.
Tim’s courses are demanding, and he requires class participation, the use of math and calculators, and a willingness to get into certain areas of basic physics. Once you’ve gained the above information, you will be in a much better position to effectively and accurately diagnose AC problems.
Tim Reardon is a Dealer Support Specialist for American Standard HVAC products.
