FOSTER PARENT IN THE ON CAMPUS FOSTER CARE PROGRAM

Position summary: Foster parents have daytoday supervision of children in the foster home. Foster parents deal as much as possible with the issues of living in the home, getting along with the children and helping them develop selfcare skills.

Foster parents are to:

  1. Study and be familiar with the Foster Parent Policies and Procedures Manual.
  1. Provide continuous live-in supervision for the house for up to six children (including their own).
  1. Be present for intake interview and be ready to evaluate potential placements.
  1. Work under the supervision of the Minister of Family Services with regard to service plans for children, scheduling, and agency policies and procedures.
  1. Keep records for children and other records as required by the Cabinet for Human Services and Potter Children's Home.
  1. Provide structure and daily activities designed to provide affection and promote the individual physical, social, intellectual, spiritual and emotional development of the children in their home. This may include:
  2. providing age-appropriate opportunities for activities, which stimulate the growth and development of the child.
  3. assisting the children to develop skills and to perform tasks, which will promote independence and the ability to care for themselves.
  4. supervising work responsibilities reasonable for the child’s age and ability and commensurate with those expected of the foster family’s own children.
  5. maintaining a structured environment (i.e. bedtimes, positive rules, study time) in keeping with the general philosophy of the home and within the discipline guidelines provided.
  1. Maintain facilities at a clean and safe level according to written guidelines, and oversee the house, equipment, appliances, and vehicles as outlined in the Foster Parent Policies and Procedures Manual.

8.Make medical/dental/eye appointments, consulting with applicable professionals as necessary, and assure compliance with treatment plans.

9.Plan, shop for supplies, and prepare nutritious meals and snacks.

  1. Transport children to appointments.
  1. Attend weekly meetings with case manager, Child and Family Services meetings, quarterly reviews, IEP and ARC meetings at school, and other meetings regarding the child.
  1. Receive appropriate yearly training including Safe Crisis Management, CPR, and First Aid.
  1. Create a positive spiritual environment through participation in church activities, home devotionals, and personal Christian conduct.
  1. Work to create a positive home environment with respect for the personal needs and feelings of each child. This will include being supportive of the child’s relationship with his parents.
  1. Be involved in school, recreation and other activities to model normal family living.
  1. Abide by and support all agency policies and regulations as they apply.
  1. Work in the food pantry on a weekly basis
  1. Participate in additional activities that support the work of Potter, including but not limited to assisting with campus-wide activities, working with other departments to prepare for events that promote the ministry, and sharing responsibilities as needed to meet the needs of residents.

Requirements

  1. Active, faithful member of the Church of Christ
  2. Have the ability to love and accept someone else’s child into their family.
  3. Be at least twenty-one (21) years of age
  4. Have been married a minimum of three (3) years
  5. High School graduate or its equivalent.
  6. Possess a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  7. Criminal and Child Abuse Registry background checkswith no record on Criminal Records report or the Department for Community Based Services Central Registry for child/spouse abuse.
  1. Fingerprinted and have no criminal record.
  2. Receive appropriate recommendations from at least three references, including a local church leader.
  1. Be in good physical and mental health and have a statement from a physician to verify that they are physically and emotionally suitable to provide care for unrelated children.
  1. Have the ability to work with other caregivers such as Potter Children’s Home staff, counselors and the child’s family of origin.
  1. Exhibit a wholesome interaction by providing security, understanding, appropriate discipline, objectivity, and spiritual guidance, as well as demonstrating other positive parenting qualities.
  2. Refrain from the use of alcohol or tobacco products.

  4. Background checks and fingerprinting
  5. Successfully complete a Home Study
  1. Complete 30 hours of pre-service preparation training.
