Encomienda System: Land grants to Spaniards. Led to forced labor for Native Americans and conversion to Christianity.

King Phillip’s War:War between Native Americans and New England colonists. Colonists were victorious and Natives posed little threat to New England colonists after this war.

Pueblo Revolt: Native Americans successfully removed the Spanish for over ten years. The Spanish regained control but became more accommodating.

Indian Removal Act: Forced relocation of Native Americans beyond the Mississippi River in the 1830s. Led to the Trail of Tears and the deaths of 1,000s of Natives.

A Century of Dishonor: Written by Helen Hunt Jackson; chronicled the broken treaties and unfair treatment of Native Americans by the US.

Dawes Act: Goal was to assimilate Natives. Gave heads of families 160 acres of land. Children were encouraged to go to boarding schools, speak English, and convert to Christianity.
