POSITION DESCRIPTION

Purpose of Classification: Operate or maintain boilers, or other mechanical equipment to provide utilities for buildings or industrial processes. Operate equipment, such as water and steam boilers.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Operate or tend boilers, and auxiliary equipment such as pumps and air-conditioning equipment, in order to supply and maintain steam or heat for buildings.
  • Observe and interpret readings on gauges, meters, and charts registering various aspects of boiler operation, in order to ensure that boilers are operating properly.
  • Activate valves to maintain required amounts of water in boilers, to adjust supplies of combustion air, and to control the flow of fuel into burners.
  • Monitor boiler water, chemical, and fuel levels, and make adjustments to maintain required levels.
  • Maintain daily logs of operation, maintenance, and safety activities, instrument readings, and details of equipment malfunctions.
  • First response to emergency calls after hours.

Education Required: High school diploma or equivalent. Previous work-related skill, knowledge, or experience required.

Experience Required: 2 years of training involving both on-the-job experience and informal training with experienced workers.

Physical requirements: standing, walking, sitting, nimble use of fingers, bending, lifting frequently, pushing/pulling loads, reaching overhead, kneeling, climbing stairs/ladders, gripping, wrist torquing. Driving the company truck. Environmental exposure to noise, altitude, heat, cold and humidity. Frequent travelling. Rotating shifts.

Special Knowledge/Skills Required:

  • Ability to read, write and receive written and/or verbal instructions in English.
  • Must have excellent verbal communication skills for interfacing with military and civilian customers.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Participation in Quality Control and Safety Program.
  • Must adhere to the Lockout/Tagout Program.
  • Responsible for tools, test equipment and vehicles.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor or lead.
  • Posses a valid state driver’s license and be deemed insurable by company Policy.
  • Must be willing to work long hours and weekends during emergency conditions.
  • Must have a good driving record.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
