Unit 9: India in the Postclassical Era

Postclassical Political Organization in India

Presentation, PowerPoint, and Short Essay

For this project, your group will be responsible for four major components: 1) researching your topic, 2) developing a presentation that covers all of the necessary information (listed below), 3) creating a PowerPoint presentation that illustrates the main points of your presentation, and 4) writing a short essay on your kingdom.

Presentation:

Your group will be responsible for teaching your class about your assigned postclassical kingdom. You will present on your kingdom for approximately 10 minutes and must cover all of the following topics:

-Time period

-Territory controlled

-how acquired

-Political Organization

-leadership (who, from where)

-emergence/development

-administration/government structure

-military

-Religion

-why chosen

-role in society

-depth of commitment/conversion

-Decline/fall

-causes

-impact

-Significance to India

-contemporary

-with regard to future development

You must present the above information in an organized and coherent fashion to ensure that your classmates get all the material they need. Need is the operative word here – you must to include and emphasize the most important points about your kingdom. Be complete, yet be concise.

You are responsible for transmitting this information to your classmates, just as they are responsible for teaching you about the other kingdoms – do not let them down.

Research:

Your textbook will be your main source for information on your particular society, though you will also have to do some research in the course of putting together your presentation, PowerPoint, and short essay.

-you may use the internet for research, but be sure that your sources are legitimate and reliable

-Wikipedia is eligible as long as the article you use is properly cited

You must cite the sources you use in a Works Cited slide at the end of your PowerPoint

-you must use MLA format

-you must alphabetize your sources by first word of each entry

-you must also cite the sources of your pictures, maps, etc.

**Though this is an informal research project and you will not be required to specifically cite each bit of information you reference in your presentation or handout, you are still bound by all rules concerning plagiarism

-do not copy information directly from your sources – even in your notes – be sure to put everything in your own

words and list your source in your Works Cited

PowerPoint:

Your group must create a PowerPoint presentation that supports your presentation. While it cannot and should not list all of the information you will speak on in your presentation (based on the above topics), your PowerPoint slides should highlight the most important points for each of the above topics and they need to illustrate these key points with pictures, maps, or other images.

Your PowerPoint must include the following:

-a title page slide with the name of your society and its time period

-at least one slide that shows the map of India marked with the location/boundaries of your kingdom and any

major cities/regions

-at least one slide for each of the five major topics listed above under Presentation

-you may have more than one slide per topic if you choose

-you should include only the most important points for each topic

-you cannot and should not try to include in the PowerPoint all the information you will cover in

your spoken presentation

-pictures, maps, and other images to illustrate your society and the main points you make in your presentation

-you must have at least one image/picture per topic, though these illustrations can be on a separate slide

from the slide with the topic information

-a Works Cited on the final slide that lists all the sources, including sources of pictures/images, you used in

putting together your presentation, PowerPoint, and short essay

Short Essay:

Your group must write an essay that is at least 2 full pages long answering the following question about your kingdom:

What was the significance or enduring legacy of your kingdom for India and the surrounding region?

How did your particular kingdom influence or change India as it developed in the postclassical era?

The essay must be typed and double-spaced and it must use proper essay format (introduction with thesis statement, body paragraphs with topic sentences, brief conclusion).

Assessment:

The group project grade will be based on the following:

-Presentation:

-all necessary information covered

-success at transmitting/teaching that information/knowledge

-organization of information

-presentation the assigned length

-PowerPoint

-all necessary slides included

-illustrations, pictures, maps included

-Works Cited page with proper MLA formatting

-Short Essay
