Post Title:Transport Manager

Location: Head Office, Bromley Cross, Bolton

Directorate:Corporate Services

Terms:Equivalent to NJC Points 27 – 32 £24,174 - £28,485 per annum

Salary is based on a 37 hours per week contract however actual hours worked will be arranged to best meet the needs of Birtenshaw

Holiday Entitlement 24 days plus 8 public holidays

Report To:Director of Resources

Direct Reports:Assistant Transport Managers and Drivers

Overall Purpose of Job

To devise, implement and maintain an effective Transport Strategy for Birtenshaw.

To ensure suitable vehicles are acquired as necessary and to oversee their maintenance.

To manage Birtenshaw’s fleet of vehicles to best meet the needs of the business.

To line manage the transport coordinator and drivers.

To carry out driving duties if required.

To deliver MIDAS training when required.

To ensure general Health and Safety is maintained at all times in all vehicles by all drivers.

To contribute to the safety of children and young people and protect them from harm.

To carry out duties in an appropriate and professional manner.

To contribute to the development and maintenance of an environment and ethos where all people are respected and valued as individuals.

To adhere to all relevant organisational policies including anti-bullying, anti-racism, health and safety.

To follow the organisation’s Standard of Attire Policy.

Key Tasks

To provide supervision and direction to members of the transport team.

To oversee and manage the transport team’s hours worked.

To ensure that daily transportation routes, vehicles used, and number of driversrequired is efficient and effective and to communicate information to the relevant staff.

To ensure that all vehicle condition meets or exceeds safety standards and thatvehicle are in good working order.

To ensure all drivers complete daily written mileage reports and pre-trip reports andsubmit those reports.

To oversee minor maintenance on vehicles, including fuelling, oil checks and cleaning.

To ensure that repairs and maintenance work to vehicles are schedule as needed.

Source cost effective suppliers and raise purchase orders for repair work.

To keep accurate records of all journeys taken are maintained.

To undertake all relevant training for driving as required by the organisations standards and regulations, such as MIDAS or First Aid

To safely assist children and young people into/out of vehicles.

To adhere to all DVLA regulations and legal requirements and vehicle tax and insurance

To carry out the MiDAS training for all drivers.

To conduct any inquiries regarding parking and speeding fines and ensure that relevant employees pay fines

To manage and road traffic accidents appropriately. That is any action required regarding the driver or any repairs to vehicles or any insurance matters to be dealt with.

To manage the Bus Service Operators Grant (Esp mileage and expenditure on fuel)

Note

This job outline forms part of the contract of employment of the person appointed to this post. It reflects the position at the present time only and may be changed at the discretion of the Management Team in the future. As a general term of employment, Birtenshaw may affect necessary change in job content, or may require the post-holder to undertake other duties provided that such changes are appropriate to the employee’s remuneration and status. This post is subject to a minimum probationary period of six months.

At least two years fleet management experience

Previous experience of driving either people carriers or minibuses
Previous experience of working as a driver
Experience of using correct clamping procedures for securing wheelchairs in the minibuses and in the safe practices for driving the buses.
Previously Midas trained or equivalent
