“This is the Call”

*CALL TO WORSHIP

One:God, the whirlwind and fire, sweeps into our presence on this, the last

Sunday of 2014 in the year of our Lord.

All:Glory be to God, who strengthens us and blesses all people with the

promise of peace even in a world consumed with conflict.

One:God, who called all worlds into being, calls forth new life in us today.

All: Glory be to God, in whose creative purpose we are claimed and

empowered.

One:God, whose Spirit unites all people in a common language of love, confirms

God’s gifts in us as we gather here.

All: Glory be to God who created light in which we can walk in confident

expectation. May our Creator use us to bring new worlds into existence, begun by the birth of Jesus Christ, our Lord.

HYMN OF PRAISE, No. 87 Antioch

“Joy to the World”

PROCLAMATION OF THE EVENT – LiturgistMargaret Balcom

For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders;and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince ofPeace. His authority will grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with justice andwith righteousness from this time onward and forevermore.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION – Congregation

Eternal God: you make all things new, and forgive old wrongs we can’t forget. We confess we have spent time without loving, and years without purpose; and the sight of a new calendar leaves us feeling strangely empty. We are afraid to expect much from the new year. Daily we have wandered from your ways, and failed to do what you ask of us. Forgive the past and our failure to see new light shining in the darkness. Lead us into the future, free from sin, free to love, and ready to work for your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen.

THE CAROL RESPONSE, No. 86 (verse 3)

“O Little Town of Bethlehem”

How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given!

So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of His heaven.

No ear may hear his coming, but in this world of sin,

Where meek souls will receive Him, still, the dear Christ enters in.

SILENT MEDITATION AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our custom is to join hands for the Lord’s Prayer.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day, our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

WORDS OF ASSURANCE - Liturgist

May Almighty God, who caused light to shine out of darkness, shine in our hearts, cleansing us from all sins, and restoring us to the light of the knowledge of His glory, in the face of Jesus Christ. Amen

THE FIRST TESTAMENT LESSON Isaiah 61:10-62:2

THE CAROL RESPONSE, No. 251 (verse 1)

“Of the Father’s Love Begotten”

Of the Father’s love begotten, ere the worlds began to be,
He is Alpha and Omega, He the source, the ending He,
Of the things that are, that have been,
And that future years shall see, evermore and evermore!

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

We believe that Jesus was born of a woman as is every child, but born of God’s power as was no other child. In the life and work of Jesus, God and humankind are united, but not one, different, but not separate. The coming of Jesus was the coming of God. Through his birth, life, death and resurrection, Jesus brings God and people together in the relationship God intended.

THE CAROL RESPONSE, No. 96 (verse 1)

“Good Christian Friends, Rejoice”

Good Christian friends, rejoice with heart and soul and voice!

Give ye heed to what we say: Jesus Christ is born today.

Man and beast before him bow, and He is in the manger now:

Christ was born to save, Christ was born to save!
