Introduction
The Trust is one of the main providers of undergraduate education working in association with the University of Birmingham.The postholder will be involved in the clinical teaching of medical students across all the modules for which the Trust takes students on placements. This post will offer excellent organisational and direct teaching experience at the undergraduate level along with the opportunity to work towards a qualification in Medical Education. It would be ideal career opportunity for a doctor awaiting entry into a specialist training programme.The post will suit a Junior Doctor with a minimum of 2years post qualification experience and who has an interest in medical education.

The Trust works in close partnership with the University of Birmingham Medical School providing clinical placements for students in years 3, 4 and 5.

There can be up to 150 students in the Trust at any one time. The Trust also hosts the 3rd year end of year clinical examination (approx. 50 students); the 5th year clinical examinations (twice a year for 72 students over 2 days) and the Therapeutics passport examination (held approx 6 times a year for 5 students each time).
The teaching is lead by Head of Academy with 3 Deputy Heads of Academy who each have responsibility for a specific year. There are lead teachers from the Consultant staff for all specialty modules. The management and co-ordination support is provided by the Medical Education Manager and 3 Undergraduate Co-ordinators who have a specific responsibility for each year.
The Trust has excellent teaching and support facilities in a new Education Centre within the hospital.
Job Summary
This post will providedirect teaching to students in all three years on clinical placement in the Trust. The postholder will also work with the Head and Deputy Heads of Academy to ensure that teaching activities and facilities in the Trust are in accordance with the “Learning and Development Agreement” with SHA and with the curriculum requirements and learning outcomes from the University of Birmingham. The postholder will act as clinical support for the clinical examinations hosted by the Trust. They will work with the Head and Deputy Heads of Academy to audit,develop and improve the teaching programmes. It is expected that the postholder/s will undertake some training in medical education or perform some research/audit into medical education within the Trust.
Main Duties
It is expected that 80% of thepostholder’s time will be given to their educational responsibilities which include:
- To support the Head and Deputy Heads of Academy and lead teachers by providing direct teaching to students in years3, 4 and 5 while on clinical placement within the Trust. This would be in the form of lectures, small group seminar work and structured bedside teaching.
- To become familiar with the teaching objectives of all the programmes being delivered by the Trust and work with the students to help them achieve these objectives.
- To be familiar with the electronic curriculum and be available to facilitate students’ self directed learning.
- To help organise and deliver appropriate clinical skills teaching to undergraduate students, working in close collaboration with the clinical skills manager and trainers.
- To act as the clinical co-ordinator for the undergraduate clinical examinations hosted by the Trust. To work with clinical colleagues to recruit patients for these examinations and attend the exams to take care of the patients and support the examiners.
- To work closely with the Head and Deputy Heads of Academy to audit,develop and improve the teaching offered by the Trust. This may be through an audit or piece of research into the teaching activities.
- To work closely with the undergraduate administration team to ensure co-ordination of all teaching programmes runs smoothly.
- To be prepared to troubleshoot/stand in should some teaching be cancelled at the last minute.
- To provide support and advice junior doctors who are involved in teaching the medical students
- To undertake some form of formal training in Medical Education and teaching methods.
The remaining 20% of the post holder’s time should be used to ensure that clinical practice is kept up-to-date and to undertake a programme of continued professional development. The nature of this will be negotiated with the successful candidate.
Main Conditions of Service
The post is subject to the terms and conditions of hospital medical and dental staff (England and Wales) as supplemented by the Trusts own terms and conditions.
The postholder should be fully registered with the General Medical Council and is advised to maintain up to date membership of a recognised medical defence organisation. Please note this post is not recognised for training

Study Leave
The post will be offered a maximum of 10 days study leave per annum to together with up to £500 study leave allowance per annum funded by the Trust.

As the nature of the work you will be undertaking during your appointment involves direct contact we have been obliged to ask you to complete a Disclosure form which will be processed by the Criminal Records Bureau. We require you to disclose any convictions, cautions, reprimands and warnings you may have under the conditions of the above order. You are not entitled to withhold such information about convictions which otherwise might be ‘spent’.
Failure to disclose such convictions could result in the termination of your appointment. The post is subject to a Criminal Records Bureau disclosure check at enhanced level.
The postholder will be required to complete the NHS Pre and Post Appointment Declaration form as outlined in HSC2002/008.
Health and Safety
The Trust recognises its duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 to ensure, as far as reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of all its employees. In addition, the business of the Trust shall be conducted so far as to ensure that patients, their relatives, contractors, voluntary workers, visitors and members of the public having access to Trust premises and facilities, are not exposed to risk to their health and safety.
All Medical and Dental staff under contract will be expected to comply with appropriate statutory requirements and Trust Health and Safety Policies. This includes the Trusts ‘No Smoking Policy’.
