Position title: Spring Break Camp Counselor

Reports to (title): Jason DeMarchi, Director of Education and Special Events

BlackRock Center for the Arts in Germantown, MD engages the community to explore, experience and celebrate the arts. BlackRock is currently seeking a talented, motivated and experienced counselor to assist Camp Director and Director of Education and Special Events for BlackRock’s Spring Break Camp. Camp runs from Monday, March 26th through Friday, March 30th, 2018.

MAJOR PURPOSE OF THIS JOB:
Counselors care for campers, ensure their safety, provide leadership, participate in all camp activities and assist camp directors in educational programming. Counselor will help to supervise roughly 15-25 campers.
RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain fun, artistic, engaging, inclusive, supportive, appropriate, productive learning environments for all students and staff.
  • Aid Program Directors in the execution of lesson plans and activities as needed and requested.
  • Supervise, mentor and support members of the staffing team including junior counselors and CITs.
  • Help to prepare the space, materials and activities as needed and requested.
  • Ensure a safe and secure environment for all camp staff and campers in their classrooms and performance spaces.
  • Help to reinforce all guidelines and rules of our programming and spaces.
  • Take time to get to know all participants in programming, staff and student alike. Inquire and become aware of any special needs specific students may have.
  • Model behavior expected of students and staff.
  • Report to the Program Directors or Education Staff as needed and be consistent in communication about progress, issues and concerns.
  • Participate in pre-camp meetings to discuss camp set-up as well as regular meetings during the camp session to debrief necessary information.
  • Perform other duties requested by camp directors or the Director of Education.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older with high school degree or equivalent; Associate’s degree or higher preferred
  • Previous experience working with children
  • Interest and knowledge about theater, music, dance and the visual arts
  • Excellent judgment and demonstrated ability to be responsible and reliable
  • Prove the ability to work in a team-based environment
  • Demonstrate the ability to be organized and adaptable
  • Very strong classroom management skills
  • Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills with strong problem-solving experience
  • Ability to be enthusiastic and maintain a positive attitude

WORK HOURS

March 26-30, 2018 from 8:30am to 4:00pm with a break. Counselor is expected to attend this entire session.
