All applicants should be a May 2017 graduate, preferably from one of the 5Cs (Pomona, Harvey Mudd, Scripps, Pitzer, or Claremont McKenna).
JOB PURPOSE: Reporting to the Director of the Rick and Susan Sontag Center for Collaborative Creativity,the Post-Baccalaureate Associate (“Post Bac”) assists in the day-to-day operations of the Sontag Center (“the Hive”), working with students, staff, and visitors to promote creative work across the five undergraduate colleges of the Claremont Colleges. As directed, the Post Bac will work with students at the Hive in design and creative processes, perform outreach activities to students, faculty, and staff regarding the Hive’s activities, and represent the Hive at various functions on and off campus.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The Post Bac works both independently and collaboratively to perform the following essential duties and responsibilities:
- Assist in managing the general operations and duties of the Hive, including
- Welcoming student, faculty, and staff users to the Hive; introducing them to guiding principles and available resources; and explaining how they may conduct and participate in Hive activities.
- Organizing and implementing periodic workshops on design related topics, including
- Assisting workshop presenters in planning and staging their events.
- Observing and offering constructive feedback to workshop organizers and presenters.
- Collecting information on workshops to support ongoing assessment activities.
- Assisting in the maintenance and regular updating of the Hive’s forms of electronic communication and social media.
- Assisting instructors of courses taught at or through the Hive and supporting course activities.
- Under the supervision of the Director, developing relationships and working with students, faculty, and staff of the 5Cs to enhance awareness of the Hive, create new opportunities and programs, and support collaboratively creative activities.
- Collaborating closely with student users of the Hive to organize social functions, training sessions, workshops, and other events.
- Maintaining meeting areas and prototyping spaces, particularly with respect to safety of users, but also including the overall care and appearance of the Hive for workshops and activities.
- Making recommendations to other Hive staffers regarding facilities and resources needed to improve the operation of the Hive.
- Coordinating special projects/tasks/duties and provide assistance as assigned.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND CRITICAL SKILLS: This position must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the job or must be able to demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed (with or without reasonable accommodation) using other knowledge, skills, and abilities not listed below.
- Deploy professional skills in design and creative engagement, in collaboration with colleagues, to best promote the Sontag Center’s guiding principles.
- Be proactive and willing to create and develop new projects and build new relationships across campuses as well as the wider community.
- Must be willing and excited to teach and learn with students, faculty, staff, community members, and local school groups at the Hive.
- Have an understanding and appreciation of, and interest and experience in design thinking and human-centered design.
- Demonstrate effective, accurate, and clear communication with excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, reading, phone, user service, and leadership skills to supervise, facilitate, motivate, and inspire a highly diverse group of student employees and professional colleagues. Follow written and verbal instructions, asking questions as needed for clarification of projects/tasks/duties/assignments.
- Be friendly, welcoming, and encouraging to anyone who is involved with or wishes to be involved with the Hive.
- Be an effective communicator via email, phone, and in person so that all dutiescan be completed in a manner that meets the needs of all parties associated with the Hive.
- Handle activities and confidential information with patience, discretion, good judgment, courtesy, and tact while working with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.
- Prioritize and perform multiple projects/tasks, meet deadlines/timelines, respond to others in a timely manner, and work both independently and as a collaborative member of the Hive staff with a high standard of integrity and ethics.
- Use appropriate organizational and time management skills to keep track of numerous projects and events simultaneously and to complete work with accuracy and a keen attention to detail.
REQUIRED HOURS: The regular hours for this full-time position are 40 hours per week, 5 days per week, on a variable schedule. Overtime, holiday, weekend, and evening work hours may be required. Regular hours may vary due to needs of the Sontag Center. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule.
