Duration:12 months – expected start date: 1 May 2017
Location:Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
TRAFFIC, the international wildlife trade monitoring network, works to ensure that trade in wild animals and plants is not a threat to the conservation of nature. We actively monitor and investigate wildlife trade and provide information to diverse audiences worldwide as a basis for effective conservation policies and programmes. TRAFFIC is a strategic alliance of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). It is organized into six regional programmes.
TRAFFIC is implementing a project, ‘Judicial Monitoring and Capacity Building Project’’ and is seeking to fill the position of Legal Data Officer.
JOB DESCRIPTION
- Major functions:
The Legal Data Officerwill monitor wildlife crime hearings at Kisitu Magistrate Court, Dar es Salaam, input information on these cases, and wildlife crime, including seizures and prosecutions, into TRAFFIC’s database, and provides information on environmental laws and regulations, especially as pertains to the Wildlife Conservation Act.
- Major duties and responsibilities:
- Attend and report on the legal proceedings and outcomes of wildlife crime cases at KisituResident Magistrates Court in Dar es Salaam;
- In collaboration with partners, and with TRAFFIC’s Research and Analysis Programme Officer, undertake training on i2 data management, and develop tools for wildlife crime court case monitoring;
- Be responsible for accurately inputtingdetailed information on wildlife crime, especially seizures and prosecutions, into TRAFFIC’s information system;
- Attend and provide logistical and technical assistance to judicial trainings on wildlife crime;
- Undertake research and provide timely advice on wildlife laws and regulations;
- Compile reports, briefing papers and other communication pertaining to wildlife law and crime; and,
- Other duties as required by the East Africa Head.
- Working Relationships
Internal: Interacts regularly with TRAFFIC’s East Africa team, the wider TRAFFIC global network, and WWF and IUCN partners.
External:Interacts routinely with Tanzania’s Judiciary and relevant partners.
Minimum Work Requirement:
- A Bachelors of Laws from a recognized university;
- Exceptional accuracy and attention to detail;
- Minimum of 3 years working experience, preferably in the field of law;
- Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Excel and internet research. Knowledge of database software an advantage;
- Experience of data entry a definite advantage;
- Professional attitude and excellent team approach;
- Excellent knowledge and use of English and Swahili language; and,
- Interest in wildlife conservation.
