POSITION TITLE: Family Intervention Worker (FIW) /Senior FIW / Indigenous FIW

REPORTS TO: Team Leader / Program Manager

PURPOSE

The Family Intervention Worker (FIW) provides both practical family support and case management of families involved in the child protection system. The Senior Family Intervention Worker provides a high level of support to both the Team Leader / Program Manager and team members in program development and delivery with minimum direction.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Provide practical family support strategies and appropriate modelling of parenting and household skills to families to strengthen parenting capacity and to provide a positive family environment.
  2. Provide supervised contact between parents and their child/ren as outlined in the Intervention Plan.
  3. Coordinate referrals and information on services available in the community.
  4. Prepare reports and maintain files in accordance with program and agency procedures.
  5. Other duties requested by Line Manager.

6.  Comply with legislative (including Workplace Health and Safety, Privacy and Equal Employment Opportunity), service agreement and Quality Management System requirements.

Additional Responsibilities for Senior FIW

1.  Demonstrate leadership by coaching, mentoring and motivating team members to achieve program goals. Assist in induction of new staff.

2.  Actively seek out professional development opportunities on behalf of the team.

3.  Coordinate regular information sessions with Child Safety Service Centres.

4.  Participate in Annual review of FIS documents for QMS.

Additional Responsibilities for Indigenous FIW

Staff provided with support and assistance on culturally appropriate practices.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

  1. Families provided with education and support in relation to intervention plan goals and satisfaction measured.
  2. Supervised contacts conducted as required and reports completed.
  3. Referred families to available services in community.
  4. Compliance with Agency procedures and legislative requirements.
  5. Client files are accurate, complete and maintained in a confidential manner.

Performance Indicators for Senior FIW

1.  Assisted in induction of new staff and supported staff within team. Staff satisfied with support from Senior FIW.

2.  Appropriate professional development sourced and forwarded to Line Manager as required.

3.  Information session coordinated with Child Safety Service Centres.

4.  Participated in annual review of FIS documents and submitted to line manager.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Mandatory Selection Criteria

MSC1: Possession of a Degree or Diploma in Social Work, Psychology, Community Services or Behavioural Sciences or substantial experience (at least 3 years) working with families in crisis.

MSC2: Possession of a ‘C’ class driver’s licence.

MSC3: Ability to possess a Positive Notice for Child Related Employment (Blue Card and a yellow card exemption) from the Public Safety Business Agency (PSBA).

Key Selection Criteria

KSC1: Demonstrated ability to impart knowledge and skills using a range of theoretical frameworks in a creative and flexible way regarding household and child management in a non-judgemental manner.

KSC2: Highly developed communication skills both written and verbal for working with a broad based network of service providers and a culturally diverse clientele.

KSC3: Knowledge of and understanding of the issues that impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in contemporary society. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Indigenous people.

KSC4: An ability to understand and describe family functioning in a broad range of cultural and social contexts and some knowledge of the impact of abuse and dysfunction within families.

KSC5: Demonstrated ability to undertake risk assessments relating to family functioning and risk within households.

Selection Criteria for Senior FIW

KSC6: Demonstrated organisational, time management and administrative skills.

KSC7: Demonstrated ability to mentor employees.

Desirable Selection Criteria

DSC1: Knowledge, skills and experience in one or more of the following: - Group work, community education and training and indigenous services.
