POSITION TITLE Director of Broadcast Media

Executive Producer, Sing For Joy

REPORTS TO: Associate Vice President for Advancement and College Relations

PRIMARY FUNCTION: This position provides overall leadership of the Broadcast Media Department, including Operations, Technical Media Services, and the Sing For Joy radio program. The Director of Broadcast Media is responsible for leading the college’s activities in recording and broadcasting college events through various distribution methods, and in providing technical services to campus constituents in a variety of locations. In addition to facilitating the daily production needs, budgeting and artistic decisions of the Sing For Joy radio program, this position works to expand and increase the reach, influence, and vision of the college through the Broadcast Media Department.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

1. Directs the college initiatives in recording and distributing concerts, lectures, and special events. Plans and implements the broadcast of these events via media such as web streaming, on-demand archives, and podcasting. Additional distribution channels may include radio, television, and compact disc. Directs all administrative aspects of this department including budgeting, marketing and strategic planning. Oversee all aspects of staff hiring, evaluation, classification and supervision.

2. Oversees equipment and infrastructure needs of the Broadcast Media Department, including studio equipment, computers, and software in Skifter Hall, Skoglund Center Auditorium, and Boe Memorial Chapel. Plans, designs, specifies and facilitates installation of new and emerging technologies to support the evolving operations of the Broadcast Media Department. Provides operational support for equipment.

3. Directs the college initiatives and operations for lighting, sound reinforcement, and video production in a variety of campus locations (excluding classroom technology).

4. Directs administrative aspects of Sing For Joy, including: planning off campus special events such as hymn festivals, convention appearances, and other radio specials; creates and implements Sing For Joy strategic plans and budgeting; develops and guides new outreach projects and program expansion; leads efforts in marketing and constituent relations.

5. Auditions and selects musical works to be used on the Sing For Joy radio program; schedules, coordinates and facilitates listening sessions involving the Host and Music Advisor; edits and formats scripts used in Sing For Joy recording sessions; produces recording sessions; edits and masters programs for national distribution. Maintains and expands library of recordings used on Sing For Joy; catalogs sacred music CDs in the Sing For Joy collection; selects and purchases new recordings for the collection.

6. Serves as Technical Director of the annual St. Olaf Christmas Festival, involving schedule coordination with Facilities, Broadcast Media, Media Services, Athletics, Music Organizations, Minnesota Public Radio, Twin Cities Public Television, and the Festival artistic staff; provides technical direction and coordination, audio engineering, recording, and production assistance and direction with above groups to ensure the smooth operation of Christmas Festival production; serves as Floor Manager of each Festival performance, ensuring an on-time and coordinated start of the event.

7. As a member of the Advancement and College Relations division, participates in campus community events and assists college colleagues, as necessary (e.g. Conference on Worship, Theology & the Arts, music department support, division projects). Serves as member of the Advancement and College Relations leadership team.

8. Assists in location recording of other musical events on and off campus

CONTACTS: Daily contact with college leaders, faculty, & staff. Frequent contact with students, alumni and listeners of Sing For Joy (national, non-alumni).

EDUCATION: Essential: Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Music

Desirable: Studies in Church Music preferred.

EXPERIENCE: Essential: 5 + years experience in initiating, planning, and leading projects and people to achieve specific goals. Experience in auditioning and recognizing high quality musical recordings. Experience in choosing music for use in Church worship services. 5 + years experience in audio production & engineering. Experience recording in many acoustic environments including studios, control rooms, concert halls, and churches.

Desirable: Experience operating and maintaining stage lighting, sound reinforcement, and video recording and editing systems.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

Ability to supervise, direct and plan a wide range of programs and initiatives related to recording, broadcast, and distribution of various forms of media, including radio, television, internet, and compact disc.

Ability to supervise, direct and plan a vigorous program of technical and operational support for lighting, audio, and video services across all areas of campus.

Ability to design, coordinate, supervise, and budget the installation and operation of extensive audio, video and data transmission networks across campus and beyond.

Ability to lead, motivate and supervise staff, managing different projects and initiatives at the same time. Because of the timeliness of many of the departmental responsibilities, staff must meet time-sensitive deadlines on a daily basis.

Advanced knowledge of the Liturgical Year, church music, scripture, hymnology, and choral repertoire.

Read music and have a general knowledge of the propagation patterns of most musical instruments. Expertise in classical music production. Solid background in basic audio wiring.

Extensive knowledge of microphones, multi-track and broadcast consoles, audio storage media including: analog multi-track tape, RDAT, ADAT, minidisk, CDR and hard drive recording systems. Knowledge in operating signal processing equipment including equalizers, compressors, limiters, AD/DA converters and outboard mic pre-amps. Knowledge of digital audio production systems including audio workstations.

Extensive knowledge of digital distribution via the internet such as web streaming, online archiving, direct download, FTP and podcasting.

Knowledge of copyright laws and policies related to recording, broadcasting, and distributing, specifically with organizations such as ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, and the RIAA.

Ability to develop and maintain excellent working relationships and interact with campus community and external customers/clients. Excellent organizational, verbal and written communication skills; interpersonal, analytical, reasoning and problem solving skills.

Ability to multi-task, set priorities, and meet deadlines. Strong content development, writing, editing skills.

Graphic / visual design knowledge helpful for advertisements, CD labels and booklets, and worship bulletins. Expert knowledge of Finale music notation software critical for production of worship bulletins for Sing For Joy special events.

Proficient skills in both PC and Mac platforms

Must be a self-starter/independent worker coupled with the ability to work in a team environment. Must have excellent customer service awareness.

Ability to implement new technologies and act as change agent.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Lifting and moving heavy and sensitive audio equipment is required for location recording and special events.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Office environment with occasional on-location recording sessions and special events. Occasional off-campus travel.
