POSITION: Product Development Engineer – Communications

POSITION REPORTS TO: New Product Development Manager, Switching

COMPANY: Hubbell Power Systems, Inc. – Switching Business Unit – Leeds, AL

PRIMARY PURPOSE: Product Development Engineer with focus on Communications will lead and support product development initiatives for distribution and substation switching products. The Engineer will manage the full product development process cycle from idea generation through product launch.

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

·  Implement different communications channels in switching products, including USB, GPS, cellular and RF.

·  Implement SCADA compatible communication protocols, such as DNP3 and IEC 61850, in new products.

·  Implement security and reliability measures in communication modules.

·  Work with marketing team members to gather customer needs to drive new product development efforts

·  Create, develop and evaluate design concepts following ANSI, IEC and/or IEEE standards.

·  Coordinate with manufacturing to optimize the design for manufacturability.

·  Perform computer simulations to validate product design concepts.

·  Coordinate and perform experiments to test product prototypes.

·  Track progress and action items for ongoing design projects.

·  Assist in preparing technical papers to describe the use and functionality of new communications modules.

·  Assist in troubleshooting and root cause failure analysis for product enhancement.

·  Attend seminars and conferences to be up-to-date with communications technology in the utility industry.

RECOMMENDED EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND:

Required:

·  MS in Electrical Engineering or similar

·  Must have experience with design and simulation tools

·  Must have experience working with test lab equipment

·  Must have knowledge of different communications technologies

·  Must have experience with communications protocols and layers

·  Must have knowledge of SCADA communications

·  Must possess strong analytical skills

·  Must possess strong written and oral communication skills

Preferred:

·  PhD in Electrical Engineering or similar

·  Experience with DNP3 and IEC61850 protocols

·  Experience with Zigbee and other RF protocols

·  Experience with Fiber Optic communications

·  Experience with EMI testing
