POSITION:INVASIVE SPECIES SPECIALIST

SALARY:$36,000/year

TERM:Permanent, Full Time 40hrs.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Invasive Species Specialist will be responsible for managing and implementing the invasive species program for the Bay Mills Indian Community. The Specialist will survey, map, report, and treat the Bay Mills Indian Community for invasive flora and fauna, assist landowners by identifying invasive species on their property, create and distribute education materials and conduct workshops for the community. The Specialist will develop and follow a management plan for invasive species on the Reservation, and modify the management plan as needed to include any new invasive species found. Cooperation with other agencies and organizations on invasive species prevention and control in the eastern Upper Peninsula will be a key to the success of the program. One example of this cooperation is the involvement in the Three Shores Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (Three Shores CISMA) as a representative of Bay Mills Indian Community. This position will be responsible for the supervision of summer technicians and interns. Overnight and/or weekend travel to meetings, trainings, or conferences may be required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Develop management and response plans for invasive species on BMIC Reservation
  2. Field plant identification and surveying
  3. Aquatic plan identification and surveying
  4. Coordinating invasive species control activities
  5. Grand and budget management
  6. Report writing
  7. Working with partners on larger scale invasive species issues (Three Shorts CISMA)
  8. Oversight of technicians and interns
  9. Data Collection, organization, management, manipulation, and display
  10. Attend any mandatory trainings
  11. Other duties as assigned

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position may require working during adverse weather conditions. Fieldwork and/or office duties may require the employee to begin early in the morning, work late into the evenings, work weekends, and travel long distances. Heavy lifting (> 50 pounds) will be required and the employee should be in good physical condition.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in a natural resources discipline
  2. Michigan commercial pesticide applicator’s license and experience applying herbicides is desired. If not licensed, ability to become licensed is required.
  3. Knowledge and experience in plan and insect identification and surveying methods
  4. Experience with developing and presenting education materials and workshops
  5. Knowledge of invasive species control methods
  6. Knowledge of GPS equipment and GIS software ArcMap
  7. Ability to oversee technician and interns
  8. Good technical writing and oral communication skills
  9. Reporting progress to superiors and Tribal Council
  10. Must be available for overnight travel
  11. Must have an excellent past work record as demonstrated from reports from past employment references
  12. To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each function listed under the essential functions and physical demands categories of this position description
