Primary Objective

Lead a skilled team to ensure our equipment is seamlessly available to safely manufacture our wide range of quality products. Focus on lean manufacturing, preventative maintenance and continual improvement with regards to the performance of the site in health & safety, quality, productivity, cost reduction and sustainability. This will be achieved through effective equipment and project management.

Key Result Area No.1

Health, Safety & Quality

Health and Safety is a critical part of maintaining the Sustainability of the business. Tumu expect their employees to take all practicable steps to ensure their own safety at work, and that no action or inaction by them while at work causes harm to any other person.

Tumu aspires for Excellence and Innovation within it’s business and it’s quality policy is to supply quality products and services to our customers that meet or exceed their requirements and expectations.

The Engineering & Maintenance Manager is responsible for contributing towards the delivery of the Health & Safety Policy within the engineering department and the factory, ensuring a healthy and safe work site and ensuring working practices are consistent with the Company’s Health & Safety Policy and with relevant legislation and regulations.

My job in this area will have been successfully performed when:

a)  I have fulfilled my responsibility to observe safe work practices, policies and procedures relating to my work. Where I see any lapses in systems and procedures, unsafe or poor work practices, or abuses of plant/machinery I raise the issue immediately with the person concerned or management. Where necessary I make recommendations for safety, systems or quality improvements through the use of the “U Fix-it ” system.

b)  I have demonstrated commitment to the Company’s quality policy and our values so we “Do It Once, Do It Right, Do It Better… Every Time”. I do this by ensuring I perform my tasks and responsibilities in accordance with the work procedures, product and service standards that relate to my role.

c)  I am aware of hazards in my work area as listed in the hazard register. When I become aware of new hazards I ensure these are reported so that they can be eliminated, isolated or minimised. I report all accidents and incidents.

d)  I have consulted with appropriate internal or external subject matter experts when coordinating engineering solutions to ensure that compliance requirements are met or exceeded.

Continued Improvement/KPI Leadership

The Engineering & Maintenance Manager is responsible for driving continual improvement across the site:

My job in this area will have been successfully performed when:

a)  I have displayed a pro active attitude towards continual improvement in all areas of the business I am involved in

b)  I am the central contact point for Engineering U Fix It forms. I have allocated the forms to the relevant engineering staff and have proactively managed close outs of all Engineering UFI’s in accordance with the timelines in the business objectives.

c)  I have proactively participated in the major business systems being the U Fix It, the Good On U and the NCP/Customer Unhappy with U.

d)  I have driven the KPI’s within the engineering department so that they a are a living business management tool. I introduce new KPI’s to measure critical business success areas that are not currently reported. I ensure that our KPI’s are being met or exceed at all times.

e)  I have ensured that all NCP’s or CUWU’s relating to the engineering area are in a state to be closed out within 3 working days.

f)  I remain up to date with new technology and the potential application across the company, particularly in regards to knowledge and implementation of suitable preventative maintenance software

g)  I initiate as required any process design and improvements to ensure key processes are lean and effective.

h)  I am proactive in performing root cause analysis to identify the true causes of issues and my team works diligently to implement solutions in a timely manner to prevent reoccurrence.

Key Result Area No.3

People Management & Leadership

The Engineering & Maintenance Manager is responsible for managing engineering staff in conjunction with Human Resources:

My job in this area will have been successfully performed when:

a)  I have been responsible for the recruitment, development, motivation and retention of assigned staff conforming to budgetary objectives and personnel policies.

b)  I have ensured success planning is in place for any relevant roles

c)  I have ensured the performance and development of all staff within the department

d)  I have given clear direction of what is expected from each employee with feedback being provided on a regular basis through informal and formal reviews and meetings.

e)  Staff are encouraged with constructive feedback and praised

f)  Any performance management or disciplinary issues are addressed as soon as is practical and where necessary are referred to HR and/or Senior Management.

g)  Training needs are identified through the annual appraisal cycle

h)  Staff are trained, developed and coached to ensure they are working safely and to achieve optimal performance. Training is carried out in accordance with Tumu training procedures and is correctly documented in our training records.

i)  I have actively managed the engineering apprenticeship scheme.

j)  I have ensured healthy and safe working conditions and practices within all company facilities to attract, retain and develop the key personnel required to support the engineering function.

k)  Planning, delegation, directing and organising of work for the engineering staff is carried out effectively and in a timely manner.

l)  I have lead a culture where staff are empowered and where people take ownership of problems and derive recognition and satisfaction from implementing solutions

m)  I have maintained a positive and willing work attitude in the engineering team at all times.

n)  I have effectively communicated and built strong working relationships with key stakeholders and across all levels of staff.

o)  I have ensured staff allocation and scheduling is appropriate to meet the support needs of the business at all times of the year.

Engineering & Maintenance Services

The Engineering & Maintenance Manager is responsible for managing engineering services on the site, ensuring all reactive and proactive maintenance is undertaken in a systematic, safe, professional, timely and cost effective manner:

My job in this area will have been successfully performed when:

a)  I have provided support and direction to the Site Engineers as required to maintain the agreed engineering standards and process efficiencies

b)  I have maintained oversight of the site engineering resources in conjunction with the General Manager to ensure the appropriate levels of effectiveness versus cost

c)  I have maintained up to date knowledge and can evaluate and advise on all major issues affecting plant operations

d)  I have maintained a cooperative and collaborative working relationship with site personnel to provide a cohesive resource to resolve operational problems

e)  I have delivered benchmarking KPI’s for R M, utilities and uptime.

f)  I have identified and agreed critical spares to be held in stock and maintain a robust system for managing spare parts.

g)  I have managed the overall site map showing buildings, facilities, machinery and utilities to ensure that it is up to date at all times.

h)  I have designed, implemented and operated a comprehensive and robust preventative maintenance system that provides optimal operational capability and maximises machine uptime.

i)  I have ensured that I have a comprehensive knowledge of all machinery on site including the automated systems.

j)  I have maintained the site fire management and prevention systems to ensure they are effective.

k)  I have ensured all business owned vehicles are safe, maintained and appropriately registered and warranted.

Key Result Area No.5

Automation Expertise & Support

The Engineering & Maintenance Manager is responsible for managing all all automated and computerised manufacturing systems:

My job in this area will have been successfully performed when:

a)  I have an in depth knowledge and understanding of all automated systems on site. Where I lack knowledge, I work proactively to gain this knowledge as soon as is practical.

b)  I have acted as the first port of call for all automated trouble shooting tasks. I ensure that where specialist knowledge is needed from suppliers and contractors I have ensured we have the skills available (locally as a priority) and have absolute responsiveness from these parties.

c)  I am constantly assessing the demands of the business and have put forward ideas for additional automation where it will add value to the business.

Key Result Area No.6

Project Management and Planning

The Engineering & Maintenance Manager is responsible for overseeing plant project works and ensuring budget expectations are met in conjunction with the General Manager:

My job in this area will have been successfully performed when:

a)  I have provided effective management of all major capex projects from project conceptualisation to post implementation review.

b)  I have provided detailed specifications to suppliers for quoting of plant machinery and other services associated with capex projects

c)  I have managed project costs with the General Manager as against capex payback values and assumptions

d)  I have ensured development work, project cost estimates, option analysis and design activities take place on a timely basis to enable efficient and effective project execution

e)  I have provided project management leadership where required for major Capex and significant R & M projects.

f)  I have ensured that projects are planned and implemented with responsibilities and timeframes clearly defined and agreed, thereby creating and maintaining communication and control of the project through all stages of the project cycle.

Key Result Area No.7

Lean Manufacturing

The Engineering & Maintenance Manager is responsible for driving Lean Manufacturing across the site:

My job in this area will have been successfully performed when:

a)  I have provided 5S site leadership and driven site wide performance in this area.

b)  I have ensured that effective Kanban systems are in place and functioning in relevant areas.

c)  I have ensured that effective control systems are in place and functioning for consumables and spare parts

d)  I have provided waste minimisation leadership across the site.

e)  I have provided leadership across other Lean areas to improve overall site performance eg root cause analysis.

Key Result Area No.8

Management Reporting

The Engineering & Maintenance Manager is responsible for reporting of management information that conveys concise, accurate information to assist decision making across their areas of responsibility:

a)  I have lead an maintained effective, relevant KPI’s and these are reported in agreed timeframes

b)  I have provided reporting of accurate and timely cost information for my key areas

c)  I have provided uptime/downtime analysis across the various machine centres reflecting a drive for maximisation of uptime.

Supplier/Contractor relationships

The Engineering & Maintenance Manager is responsible for maintaining effective relationships with operational contractors and suppliers:

a)  I have ensured that operational contractors and suppliers are appropriately inducted to enable them to access the site in accordance with business requirements.

b)  I have ensured that suppliers and contractors are conducting business in accordance with our health and safety requirements at all times.

c)  I have ensured that current preferred supplier agreements are in place with all major suppliers which detail agreed pricing (labour & materials) and terms of trade.

d)  I have engaged suppliers and contractors on the basis of best value to the business.

Administrative Functions

The Engineering & Maintenance Manager is responsible for ensuring that all relevant administrative functions are carried out in accordance with company procedure:

a)  I have ensured that all purchase order and invoicing procedures are followed consistently.

b)  I have maintained the preferred supplier agreements as current.

c)  All other administrative functions are carried out in an accurate and timely manner.
