Position: CONSTRUCTION MANAGER/BUSINESS MANAGER

Shwe Miikaan Corporation is a for profit Company wholly and jointly owned by Shawanaga First Nation, Magnetawan First Nation and Henvey inlet First Nation. The company will be active in the construction of the wideningof Highway 69 from Parry Sound to south of Sudbury. The long term goal of the Corporation is to successfully bid on the long term maintenance contract for the Highway after construction is complete.

Start Date: Immediate

Term: Permanent after Probationary period

The person we are looking for.

Shwe Miikaan Corp seeks a motivated individual who is interested in a long term commitment to play an excitingsenior role in a growing First Nations owned Construction Company. In this position you will be working under the supervision and direction of the current Construction Manager and the Business Manager for approximately 18 months and learn valuable skills that will enable you to eventually fill that role.

You will gain the knowledge to manage business and construction operations, estimate and bid on contracts and interact with partners from all aspects of the business. The applicant must have a keen interest in the construction industry, good interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.

In addition to the Construction Management learning opportunity, the individual selected will also support the Board of Directors in their important role and will also manage the day to day business of the Corporation.

The applicant need not have extensive construction contractingexperience but must have business experience in connection with First Nations. The applicant must be motivated to immerse themselves in the business and go the extra mile to be able to step into the Construction Manager role at the end of the training period. Experience will be gained on the job but any experience or skills would be an asset. Please review the qualifications below and highlight any that may apply to your experience in your application.

  • Construction and contract related experience
  • Business and Financial management experience
  • Experience working with First Nations
  • Knowledge of highway engineering standards, maintenance, construction and materials
  • Knowledge of contract administration principles/practices applicable to highway and bridge construction practices gained through work experience and/or training
  • Progressively responsible technical/working experience in the construction of highways and bridges
  • Supervisory experience
  • Provided management of project expenditures, accurately forecasted anticipated expenditures and approved contractor and consultant payments
  • Knowledge of contract documents and technical drawings
  • Procurement and management of Sub Contractors
  • Excellent interpersonal/communication skills – both written and oral and proven ability to deal effectively with individuals to resolve deviations from policy and procedures in contract documents.
  • Experienced presenting to and communicating with senior staff.
  • Experience in dealing with senior staff, Chief and Council, as well as other outside authorities
  • Good judgement, analytical and problem solving skills
  • Effective skills at setting Priorities with the ability to meet deadlines under minimal supervision
  • Knowledge of regulations and legislation pertaining to safe working conditions and the environment
  • Well-developedcomputer skills
  • Ability to Manage a Budget
  • Supporting the Board through setting agendas, managing meetings and reporting
  • Ability to use and relate to Professionals supporting the Corporation, such as Legal and Financial specialists
  • Ability to handle complex relationships as well as contentious situations
  • The position involves reporting to funders and the three First Nations
  • Ability to relate to Government officials is required
  • Must be willing to commit to long term employment as the leader of the Corporation

Other Considerations:

  • Preference will be given to Aboriginal candidates with relevant employment experience and or skills. Those with knowledge and understanding of First Nations History and Communities will also be given preference.
  • Job location is Magnetawan First Nation with travel required
  • Successful Candidates must be able to produce and maintain a clean Criminal Record Check
  • Must have a valid Ontario drivers licence and a reliable vehicle
