Master Gardener Volunteer: FYN HOME CONSULTANT (non-paid to work 75 hours over next year)

General Information: The Master Gardener Volunteer for this position will be given a minimum of fifty hours of intensive training in horticulture. Instruction will include classroom training and hands-on clinics conducted by county Extension Agents and other specialists. Training will include sessions on plant physiology, insects, plant diseases, care of landscape plants, vegetable gardening, fruit gardening, lawn management, landscape design, irrigation and communications.

Upon completion of the training and achieving a passing score on a written examination, the Master Gardener will begin his/her volunteer service with their local Cooperative Extension office. A minimum of seventy-five hours of volunteer service are required during a 12-month period following the training. A work schedule and activities will be coordinated by the Extension Agent, ...name... Any recommendations provided by the Master Gardener while under the direction of the County Extension office must be consistent with those of the Florida Cooperative Extension Service. The Master Gardener will be required to keep records of his or her volunteer activities.

Duties: Make home visits within county upon request. Must be willing to travel throughout the county in personal vehicle.

Most visits will be for the purpose of assessing landscapes according to a given standard.. Soil samples and plant samples will often be required.

Volunteer will assemble a resource box containing Extension literature, soil sample bags, soil probe, sample containers and other resources that can be carried to the home site to assist in problem diagnosis.

Will keep County Extension Agent abreast of current problems occurring in the field and consult with the Agent whenever difficult problems occur. All recommendations provided on-site must be consistent with those of the Florida Cooperative Extension Service. The answer, "I don't know, but I'll find out", should be supplied when an immediate solution cannot be provided.

Desirable Skills: Ability to analyze a situation thoroughly before reaching a conclusion.

Ability to communicate effectively.

Willingness to accept supervision and to adhere to the guidelines and policies of the Florida Cooperative Extension Service.

Horticultural experience preferred.

Ability to interpret and communicate Florida Cooperative Extension Service recommendations.
