You will have the opportunity to write several poems about War and Remembrance in this unit. Please select YOUR TWO (2) BEST POEMS to submit as part of your portfolio (5 marks each).

YOUR CHOICE! Select two (2) of the following activities to include in your portfolio

(5 marks each):

  1. “Join the Story” from When the Spirits Dance
  2. “The Finale” from When the Spirits Dance
  3. If I was a soldier…. descriptive paragraph (thoughts/feelings, sights, sounds)
  4. Why I should wear a poppy? paragraph (with paper poppy)
  5. Who was the unknown soldier? paragraph

Speaking:

You will present a summary on an Aboriginal soldier and his/her contributions to the war effort

(5 marks)

You will select a poem about war and remembrance to read aloud to the class (Speaking Club)

(20 marks, 10 marks for average of peer assessment, 10 marks for teacher assessment)

You will read a section of your Literature Circle book to your group (your teacher will join your Literature Circle group for the day to listen to each group member read) (5 marks)

Listening:

During this unit you will listen to at least 2 songs about remembrance and war. You will select YOUR BEST LISTENING REFLECTION ANSWER SHEET to hand in with your portfolio

(5 marks each).

You will actively show you are listening to all speakers and presentations (10 marks)

You will write a summary and reflection on the school’s Remembrance Day service (5 marks)

You will write a summary and reflection on the presentation by CFB Shilo (5 marks)

Viewing:

You will view several still images during this unit. You will select 3 of your BEST VIEWING REFLECTION ANSWER SHEETS to hand in with your portfolio (5 marks each)

You will view a stop-motion animation film called Wapos Bay: Something to Remember during this unit. You will hand in a summary and reflection on the film (5 marks for good viewing practices, 5 marks for summary and reflection, 5 marks for explanation of how you would show respect/appreciation to a veteran)

You will present a scene between The Unknown Soldier and John McCrae with a partner or small group (maximum of 3 people) (5 marks).

You will select ONE (1) of the following projects to complete and hand in with your portfolio. This project is to be done on your own and may require work outside the classroom to complete.

(10 marks):

1)Illustrate a poem about war and remembrance. You must include the poem. This is not a poem that you will write; it is a poem someone else has written. There will be a bank to select a poem from. If you wish to find your own poem it must be approved by the teacher.

2)Design and create a card for someone who has lost a friend or family member in war. Your final project will look like a real card (cover image, inside message) and will include your own personal message of condolence. You do not need to know someone killed in war to complete this activity.

3)Create a poster on the theme “Why I Remember”. This poster may be submitted as part of the annual Royal Canadian Legion poster contest.

4)Create a collage of pictures and words (cut and paste) related to Remembrance Day.
