Stonewall Background Information

Stonewall was founded in 1989 by people whose aim was to create a highly professional lobbying organisation to put the case for equality on the mainstream political agenda. The organisation has become widely recognised for its work in transforming the legislative landscape for Britain’s 3.7m lesbian, gay and bisexual people including securing equal marriage in 2013. Our strategy is now to work to ensure equality in every part of the lived experience of LGBT people.

In February 2015, after an extensive consultation with over 700 trans people Stonewall extended its remit and became a charity which campaigns for lesbian, gay, bi and trans equality. The Trans Advisory Group was then formed, with Stonewall’s ‘A Vision for Change’ a result of their efforts and based on a shared mission: that trans people have the right to live full and authentic lives at work, home and in public life.

We work with a comprehensive range of audiences and are one of the most effective campaigning charities in Great Britain. Stonewall is at a crucial stage. The challenges that we face are complex as we attempt to ensure that every single lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans person achieves full equality. We have an ambition to reach further into our communities, sharing our knowledge, interventions and campaigns with the widest possible audience. We no longer have to just change the hearts and minds of politicians; we have to change the hearts and minds of the dad who doesn’t want a gay son, the priest who doesn’t know he has lesbian parishioners, the sports club that tolerates biphobic banter, the high-street shop that excludes trans customers from changing facilities.

Stonewall’s Diversity Champions programme

Stonewall Programmes exist to accelerate equality for LGBT people by:

·  helping businesses, charities, public services and educational institutions to develop inclusive cultures through membership of one our innovative Champion programmes

·  expertly supporting the professional and personal development of individual LGBT leaders, role models and allies

The Diversity Champions programme is Britain’s leading employers’ membership forum, creating and sharing best practice for lesbian, gay, bi and trans equality. With over 750 member organisations from public, private and third sectors who employ over thirteen million staff, our programme is the largest employer diversity forum in the world.

As part of our programmes we provide a range of services to our members, including:

·  Tailored support and advice from our trained account managers

·  Access to best practice guidance, through our publications, seminars and conferences

·  Opportunities to profile themselves as employers of choice through use of our logos, careers guide and job site

These are all detailed online at www.stonewall.org.uk/workplace.

Stonewall staff

At Stonewall we believe our people to be our most precious resource. We aim to recruit the very best staff – with a mix of private, public and third sector backgrounds – and have an ambition to make Stonewall an ‘employer of choice’. We’ve reviewed our benefits package in recent years to reflect this. In our most recent (October 2016) staff survey:

·  93% of staff said they were proud to work for Stonewall

·  96% of staff enjoy working with the people at Stonewall

·  91% of staff said that they enjoy what they do

We believe we have an obligation to role model some of the objectives that we encourage others to set for themselves and have worked hard in recent years to diversify our workforce. At October 2016:

·  56% of our staff identify as female

·  6% of our staff identify as trans or non-binary

·  8% of our staff were from black and minority ethnic communities

·  14% of our staff considered themselves to be disabled

·  23% of our staff identify as heterosexual

·  23% of our staff identify as bi

·  72% of our staff were 34 and under
