ROAD NAMING

POLICY DIRECTIVE NO. G-1

SUBJECT:ROAD NAMING

REFERENCE:

A.PROCEDURE TO ESTABLISH NEW ROAD NAMES AT TIME OF SUBDIVISION:

1.A developer will be required, upon receiving preliminary approval for a subdivision plan, to fill out and return a “Standard Road Designation Form” as forms Schedule “A” to this policy, for each road proposed to be created within his development, including an alternative name for each new road. A list of suggested historical names will also be given to the developer to consider for the area in which his development is located.

2.Thirty days will be allowed for the review and comments by the various departments or agencies unless the timing for final subdivision approval involves a longer time span.

3.If the names chosen by the developer are acceptable to the above interested parties, then Council could pass a resolution to accept the names for the new roads to be dedicated.

B.CRITERIA TO BE USED FOR SELECTING NAMES FOR NEW ROADS:

1.That names be relatively easy to pronounce and spell.

2.That names not consist of more than two words (eg: “Beech Street” versus “Beech Nut Street”).

3.That names have fairly simple phonetic sounds.

4.That names that have some historical meanings for Chilliwack be of a primary consideration, if applicable.

5.That names not be duplicated from area to area in Chilliwack (area served by the enhanced 911).

6.That first names may be used if deemed a more appropriate choice than a last name.

7.That names not be based on frivolity.

8.That names for streets within a multi-road development be grouped according to a topic or theme.

CRITERIA TO BE USED FOR SELECTING NAMES FOR NEW ROADS (continued)

  1. That “Street” be used in urban areas where a new road has a distinct north-south alignment.

10.That “Avenue” be used in urban areas where a new road has a distinct east-west alignment.

11.That “Way” may be used in urban areas for a road, as in a collector or arterial, linking two other collectors or arterials (eg: Luckakuck Way).

12.That “Drive” be used in urban or rural areas where a distinct north-south or east-west alignment is not present.

13.That “Road” be used in rural areas only.

14That “Crescent” be used where the road alignment forms a shape similar to a half-circle, and can be accessed at either end by another road.

15.That “Place” be used in urban areas where the road ends in a cul-de-sac and which serves ten or less residences.
