What is a Poster Presentation?
A poster is a visual medium that you use to communicate your information, ideas and argument. Think of it as a visual essay but one that uses diagrams and/or images as well as text.
A poster is a type of presentation but it is one where the poster illustrates your findings and you provide the verbal support and explanation; in effect a briefing.
You will have to stand beside your poster while it is being assessed and provide an overview of your findings. You will be required to answer any questions the marker may have. This may include ‘fleshing out’ in more detail, any points you make, talking about what you have read for the assignment and the sources you have used, clarifying your argument, or providing a justification for the choice of topic you have made.
Learning to explain, support and discuss your work in this way is an essential academic and transferable skill. Overall, you should plan your briefing to lastno more than 10 minutes, including a Q and A period.
An effective poster will:
- Use a single slide, page or screen.
- Get the message across using a mixture of images and text.
- Only use short blocks of text
- Make sure that the text is large enough to be seen from about 4 feet away.
- Use an easily read font.
- Have a title.
- Have clear headings.
- Will be well ordered and uncluttered.
- Use colour, but sparingly.
- Keeps the reader in mind. Remember, most people read from left to right and top to bottom so don’t create confusion by introducing a different sequencing.
- Be supported by effective notes (which will also be subject to assessment)
- Include a reference list

This assignment may also be peer reviewed. This means that you may be required to review a selection (not all) of your colleagues’ work and provide feedback comments of your own.
All posters may be displayed at the same time and date and will form part of a small ‘exhibition’ of your work.
